Cholesterol is more than one number
Total cholesterol only tells part of the story. A standard lipid panel also looks at LDL-C, HDL-C and triglycerides. These figures are best considered together, alongside the other factors that shape overall cardiovascular risk.
Standard lipid panel: total cholesterol, LDL-C, HDL-C and triglycerides. If you only know your total cholesterol, you do not have the full lipid picture.
Lp(a) at least once in adulthood: lipoprotein(a) is largely genetically determined and can add information that a standard lipid panel may not reveal.
ApoB when relevant: for some people, ApoB can give a clearer picture of the number of atherogenic lipoprotein particles, particularly where triglycerides are raised, diabetes is present or standard results need more context.
Body weight does not tell the whole story. A slim person can still have raised LDL-C or genetically high Lp(a). Results make most sense in the wider context of age, blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, family history and other risk factors.
The key takeaway? Before comparing supplements you have found while researching cholesterol, it helps to know which markers you are actually tracking. If you only have a total cholesterol result, ask about a full lipid profile and, where appropriate, Lp(a) or ApoB.
Looking specifically for plant sterols?
CardioSmile provides 2,000 mg of plant sterols per sachet. Cholestamin does not contain added phytosterols in its declared ingredients.
What do two capsules contain?
Two capsules provide 1,400 mg of the NAHS proprietary blend. On the US label, Proprietary Blend means the total weight of the blend is declared, while the individual amounts of each ingredient are not.
The order still matters. Ingredients in a proprietary blend on a US label are listed in descending order by weight. That tells us red sour grape powder is the largest component of the five-ingredient blend, but the exact amount of each ingredient cannot be determined without additional information from the manufacturer.
Why ingredient form matters: a whole-seed powder, fruit powder, concentrate and oil extract are not interchangeable. We therefore describe Cholestamin exactly as it appears on the label, without converting one form into an assumed amount of another.
Five ingredients in the blendHow their source and form differ
Five ingredients, several different forms
Cholestamin brings together fruit and seed powders, an organic garlic concentrate and marine kelp. What matters is the form each ingredient takes – a powder, concentrate and oil are not the same thing.
1. Red sour grape powder
The label lists red sour grape powder. This is a grape powder, not an extract standardised to a single compound. It appears first in the proprietary blend, which means it has the highest weight contribution of the five listed ingredients.
2. Northern Pacific kelp
Kelp is not a land plant but a broad term for large brown seaweeds. The manufacturer specifies Northern Pacific kelp, but does not name the exact species, so we do not assign a species or mineral content that the label itself does not declare.
3. Organic garlic concentrate
Organic garlic concentrate means a concentrated garlic ingredient. Without a stated concentration ratio or standardisation, it cannot be accurately converted into grams of fresh garlic or compared gram-for-gram with ordinary garlic powder.
4. Black seed – Nigella sativa
Nigella sativa belongs to the buttercup family. The English names black seed and black cumin can be confusing: botanically, it is neither caraway nor cumin. Cholestamin uses whole-food seed powder, not black seed oil.
5. Organic cocona
Cocona (Solanum sessiliflorum) is an edible tropical fruit native to Central and South America. It belongs to the Solanum genus, alongside tomatoes and aubergines. Cholestamin uses organic cocona fruit powder – it has nothing to do with cocoa or cacao.

What the proprietary blend actually tells you
The label gives us the total blend weight of 1,400 mg and the order of the five ingredients by weight. It does not disclose the individual amounts or any standardisation unless separately stated by the manufacturer. That means it would not be accurate to calculate assumed amounts of naturally occurring compounds from these figures.

North American Herb & Spice: specialists in wild herbs and thoughtful botanical blends
NAHS builds its products around an understanding of plants, their origins and how they work together within a formula. The brand seeks out raw materials from remote natural habitats, works with whole-root and other whole-plant powders as well as oil extracts, and develops its products in its own research and manufacturing facilities. The philosophy is rooted in traditional herbalism: value comes not from one headline compound, but from the quality of the whole ingredient, how it is processed and the role it plays in the finished blend.
Wild herbs, sourced at origin
NAHS looks for plants where they naturally grow and, where possible, processes fresh raw material close to the source. For Oreganol P73, the brand uses its own blend of wild high-mountain oregano species and steam-distils the hand-harvested plant.
The whole botanical, not one isolated compound
NAHS generally aims to preserve the broader natural profile of the plant part being used rather than building every product around one isolated compound. In Cholestamin, organic garlic concentrate sits alongside red sour grape powder, black seed powder, kelp and cocona powder.
In-house formulation, manufacturing & quality control
Products are developed by the brand's own team and manufactured within NAHS facilities. This gives the company direct control over ingredient selection, formulation, processing and quality checks, while exact blend ratios remain part of its proprietary know-how.

Why processing method matters with herbs
The same botanical can appear in a supplement as a powder, infusion, macerate or extract. Processing affects which naturally occurring compounds are retained and how fairly different products can be compared.

Questions about Cholestamin
Who is Cholestamin best suited to based on its formula?
It is designed for adults who prefer a traditional multi-ingredient botanical blend in capsule form rather than a supplement built around one isolated compound. Cholestamin combines plant powders, organic garlic concentrate and marine kelp in one proprietary NAHS blend.
What does “Proprietary Blend 1,400 mg” actually mean?
On a US label, Proprietary Blend means the manufacturer declares the total weight of the blend – here, 1,400 mg per 2 capsules – without having to state the amount of each ingredient separately. Ingredients are listed in descending order by weight.
Is the “black seed” in Cholestamin Nigella or cumin?
It is black seed (Nigella sativa). The English names black seed and black cumin can be misleading because Nigella is botanically neither caraway nor cumin. It belongs to the buttercup family, whereas caraway and cumin belong to the parsley family.
Why is black seed often associated with traditional herbalism?
Black seed has been used for centuries as a food, spice and traditional botanical ingredient across the Middle East and South Asia, including in Unani and Ayurvedic traditions. This is historical context about traditional use, not a claim about the effects of Cholestamin.
What does “Northern Pacific kelp” mean?
Kelp is a broad term for large brown seaweeds, not the name of a single species. The Cholestamin label states “Northern Pacific”, but does not specify the exact species or declare a separate mineral content.
What is cocona and where does it come from?
Cocona (Solanum sessiliflorum) is an edible tropical fruit native to Central and South America. It belongs to the same genus as tomatoes and aubergines. Cholestamin uses organic cocona fruit powder; botanically, it has nothing to do with cocoa.
What is “organic garlic concentrate” and can it be converted into fresh garlic?
The label states organic garlic concentrate, meaning a concentrated garlic ingredient. Because the manufacturer does not provide a concentration ratio or standardisation, it cannot be reliably converted into a specific amount of fresh garlic or compared gram-for-gram with ordinary garlic powder.
What is pullulan and why is it used for the capsule shell?
Pullulan is a polysaccharide produced by fermenting food starch. Its film-forming properties make it useful for capsule shells. In Cholestamin, it replaces animal-derived gelatine.
How should I take Cholestamin and how many servings are in a pack?
The US Supplement Facts panel lists a reference serving of 2 capsules, providing 1,400 mg of the blend. A 90-capsule pack therefore contains 45 reference servings. For daily use, always follow the dosage instructions on the label supplied with your pack.
Can Cholestamin replace medication or medical advice?
No. Cholestamin is a food supplement and is not a substitute for prescribed treatment or professional medical care. If you take medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a medical condition, speak to your doctor or pharmacist before use.

NAHS works with ordinary people who hand-pick the ingredients they need in remote corners of wild and unspoiled nature, whether from the high Mediterranean mountains, the Peruvian Amazon, the far north of wild Canada, the remote Siberian forests, or other places. Through this collaboration, NAHS not only sources the cleanest and most potent ingredients, but also supports natural villages and community infrastructure. Indigenous communities with donations, building schools and opening wells, as well as sending their highly effective natural supplements to those in need.
