Key ingredients and their benefits

Redmond Bentonite Clay

The base of the paste is mineral bentonite clay Redmond Clay, which gently cleans and polishes surface stains. The clay also naturally binds toxins and brings trace minerals into the formula.

The overall abrasiveness of the paste is RDA 105 (medium), sufficiently effective yet safe for daily use (PubMed).

Nanosilver

Used in the declared concentration of 2 ppm (0.0002%). In such a low dose, it acts as a natural preservative, so there is no need to use synthetic additives.

Studies show that silver has antimicrobial effects, and it has been safely used in cosmetics and hygiene for decades.

Real Salt™ Sea Salt

Mineral Real Salt™ sea salt Real Salt™ comes from prehistoric deposits in Utah. It contains more than 60 trace elements (calcium, magnesium, potassium, etc.), which can contribute to the natural balance in the mouth.

In the paste, it supports an alkaline pH, creating an environment less favorable for the growth of caries-causing bacteria.

Essential Oils – Spearmint Blend

Spearmint essential oil – brings a mildly sweet herbal flavor. Unlike peppermint, it primarily contains carvone instead of menthol, which explains its milder and sweeter aroma (PubMed).

Menthol – a natural component from mint oils; provides a cooling effect and supports a feeling of long-lasting freshness. Menthol also exhibits a mild local anesthetic effect, which can contribute to comfort during brushing (PubMed).

Tea tree oil – known for its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, used in the paste in a safely low concentration. Studies confirm its effect against bacteria associated with dental plaque and gum inflammation (PubMed).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is it important to remove dental plaque?
Dental plaque is a soft biofilm formed by bacteria, food debris, and saliva. If not regularly removed, the bacteria in it produce acids that erode tooth enamel and lead to cavities.

Untreated plaque gradually mineralizes and turns into tartar. This not only makes cleaning difficult but also promotes gingivitis and can contribute to the development of periodontitis – a serious condition that is now one of the main causes of tooth loss in adults (PubMed, 2017).

Research also shows that chronic gum inflammation and the presence of pathogenic plaque can be associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases and other systemic issues (Circulation Research, 2020). Therefore, plaque care is not just an aesthetic matter but also an important step for overall health.
How does Earthpaste® work against plaque?
Earthpaste® combines several natural ingredients that work together against plaque formation:

Redmond Clay bentonite clay gently polishes the surface of the teeth, binds bacteria and toxins, and mechanically helps reduce biofilm buildup.
Real Salt™ mineral salt promotes an antibacterial environment and contributes to a higher pH in the mouth, making it harder for caries-causing bacteria to thrive.
Xylitol (in variants where it is included) reduces acidity and makes it harder for bacteria to adhere to the tooth surface.

Clinical studies show that regular chewing of xylitol gum leads to reduced plaque formation and that xylitol can inhibit biofilm formation of Streptococcus mutans in laboratory conditions (BMC Microbiology, 2020). In clinical practice, it has been confirmed that products containing xylitol reduce the amount of cariogenic bacteria in plaque (Frontiers in Nutrition, 2022).

Healthy xylitol gum from the leading Canadian manufacturer PÜR can be purchased on our e-shop – we have been the exclusive importer of this brand for the Czech Republic and Slovakia for many years.
Does xylitol really help against tooth decay?
Yes. Xylitol is a natural sugar alcohol that bacteria causing tooth decay (e.g., Streptococcus mutans) cannot metabolize. As a result, acid production in plaque decreases, and the environment in the mouth remains less acidic – which limits enamel damage.

Clinical studies show that regular chewing of xylitol gum leads to reduced plaque formation and that xylitol can inhibit biofilm growth of Streptococcus mutans in laboratory conditions (BMC Microbiology, 2020). Further meta-analyses confirm that products containing xylitol can reduce the amount of cariogenic bacteria in plaque and contribute to a lower risk of decay (Frontiers in Nutrition, 2022).

If you want to benefit from xylitol even outside of toothpaste, we recommend xylitol gum. Chewing it after meals supports neutralization of the acidic environment in the mouth and increases saliva production, which is a natural defense against cavities.
Why is the Spearmint variant without xylitol?
The Spearmint variant was intentionally developed without xylitol. The reason is both the safety for pets (xylitol is toxic for dogs and cats) and the preference of some users who want a pure herbal flavor without sweeteners.

Typically, xylitol or another sweetener is added to natural toothpaste to partially mask the taste of mineral components, such as salt or clay.

In the Spearmint version, however, the flavor notes are allowed to fully shine – that is, the fresh, mildly sweet taste of spearmint combined with menthol and tea tree oil.

For those who want Spearmint and also the benefits of xylitol, there are other variants:
Do clay and sea salt really have positive effects on teeth?
Yes. Available research confirms that both bentonite clay and sea salt can play a useful role in oral hygiene:

Redmond Clay bentonite clay forms the base of the Earthpaste® formula – it is the second ingredient in the composition. Thanks to its high adsorption capacity, it can bind bacteria, toxins, and heavy metals while mechanically cleaning and polishing teeth. Clinical studies show that bentonite mouthwash can reduce the amount of dental biofilm similarly to chlorhexidine.

Real Salt™ sea salt is present in a smaller amount but still functional. It acts osmotically and alkalizes the environment in the mouth, making it less favorable for bacteria. It also contains more than 60 trace minerals, which can support gum healing and reduce inflammation.

Clay safety: the quality of the source is crucial. Some freely sold clays have been found to contain traces of lead. Therefore, it is important to use verified and transparent brands like Redmond.

RDA abrasiveness: Earthpaste® has an RDA value of 105, which according to the American Dental Association (ADA) falls into the safe medium range. This means that the paste effectively removes plaque and stains without excessively wearing down the enamel.
Why does Earthpaste® not contain glycerin?
Glycerin is a commonly used ingredient in regular toothpastes. It acts as a humectant (keeps the paste moist), a binder (ensures consistency), and sometimes as a sweetener. However, it has no remineralizing effect – it is purely a technological ingredient.

You may often encounter the claim that glycerin creates a film on the teeth that supposedly prevents remineralization. This myth was spread primarily by chemist Gerald F. Judd in his book Good Teeth, Birth to Death. His thesis quickly caught on in alternative circles but was never supported by scientific studies.

Modern experts, on the other hand, point out that glycerin is quickly washed off the teeth by saliva, and there is no evidence that it blocks mineral absorption long-term. This is confirmed by, for example, Dr. Mark Burhenne, DDS (Ask the Dentist) and dentists from Knoxville Family Dental.

A practical guideline is the order of ingredients in the composition: ingredients listed at the top are present in the largest amount. If glycerin is among the first three ingredients, you will find a lot of it in the paste, and it may be more noticeable in the mouth. If it is at the end, its amount is minimal, and most people will not notice a difference.

Earthpaste® decided to completely omit glycerin. Not because it is harmful, but because it adheres to the philosophy of a simplest possible formula, where each ingredient brings a real benefit – mechanical cleaning, antibacterial effect, or freshness.
Why does Earthpaste® not contain fluoride?
Fluoride is the most common active ingredient in conventional toothpastes for cavity prevention. It helps remineralize tooth enamel and creates a more resistant mineral fluorapatite, which dissolves less in an acidic environment. Therefore, it is recommended by the American Dental Association or WHO as proven prevention.

On the other hand, excessive fluoride intake can cause fluorosis (white spots on teeth) in children and stomach irritation in sensitive individuals. Therefore, some users seek alternative fluoride-free toothpastes.

Earthpaste® reflects this demand and bases its protective effect on bentonite clay, Real Salt™ sea salt, and essential oils. It cleans mechanically, maintains pH balance, and supports the natural remineralization of teeth.

This approach gives people the choice: either conventional fluoride prevention or a purely natural path – with the understanding that proper hygiene and diet are equally essential for healthy teeth.
Is nanosilver in Earthpaste® safe?
Nanosilver is known for its antimicrobial effects and is used in medicine, hygiene, and food. In Earthpaste®, it acts as a natural preservative – protecting the formula from the proliferation of bacteria, molds, and yeasts.

The paste contains silver at a concentration of 2 ppm (0.0002%), which is many times lower than therapeutic applications in medicine. It serves solely to maintain the stability and purity of the product.

Scientific studies confirm that nanosilver can inhibit the proliferation of microorganisms, and when used topically, it is safely excreted from the body and does not accumulate in tissues (PubMed).

Thanks to this, Earthpaste® is suitable for those seeking minimal composition without synthetic preservatives – the role of protection here is fulfilled by a trace amount of silver.
Why does Earthpaste® not contain foaming agents like SLS?
The myth that toothpaste must significantly foam to clean well is still widespread. In reality, foam does not directly affect plaque removal – it is created only by synthetic foaming agents, most commonly SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate).

SLS is a cheap and widely used ingredient in shampoos and cleaning products. In toothpaste, it creates a feeling of cleanliness, but numerous studies point to its irritating effects. SLS-free pastes lead to fewer occurrences of canker sores and inflammatory changes in the mucosa.

Therefore, Earthpaste® chooses the path of completely without foaming agents. The cleaning effect is ensured by mineral components – bentonite clay and Real Salt™, which mechanically and antibacterially clean teeth.

However, if the feeling of foam has psychological significance for you, we recommend a natural alternative – Georganics tooth soap. Thanks to olive oil, cocoa butter, and essential oils, it creates a gentle natural foam, lasts up to 6 months, and offers a compromise between foaming and clean composition.
How does Earthpaste® differ from toothpastes with hydroxyapatite?
Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is a mineral that naturally forms tooth enamel and bone. Modern scientific studies show that its nano- or microparticles can remineralize weakened enamel and act as an alternative to fluoride (PubMed, 2019).

Earthpaste® chose a different philosophy: instead of adding synthetically produced hydroxyapatite, it relies on bentonite clay and Real Salt™ sea salt. These mechanically clean teeth, support pH balance in the mouth, and provide trace minerals. The result is a simplest possible formula without extra ingredients, which corresponds to the minimalism of the Redmond brand.

However, if you are among the users who want active remineralization with hydroxyapatite, you can opt for Georganics toothpaste with hydroxyapatite. This British brand combines natural composition with the effects of hydroxyapatite and thus represents a different path to strengthening enamel.

Both options – Earthpaste® without hydroxyapatite and Georganics with hydroxyapatite – are full-fledged natural alternatives. The difference lies in whether you prefer a simplest possible formula or a targeted remineralization effect.

Redmond is an American brand built around simple, clean and minimally processed ingredients. Its story began in 1958 in central Utah, where brothers Milo and Lamar Bosshardt began working an underground deposit of ancient sea salt. This is the source of Real Salt® – an unrefined salt that became the foundation of Redmond’s present-day range.

The original business grew into a brand with a history rooted in two mineral resources from Utah – ancient sea salt and bentonite clay formed from ancient volcanic ash. Real Salt® and Redmond Clay® were gradually joined by Re-Lyte® electrolytes, Seasonings, Earthpaste® oral care and the newer Roots and Leaf ranges. Each category has a different use, but they share an emphasis on traceable ingredient origins, simple formulations and fewer unnecessary additives.

What Redmond products are known for:

  • Its own salt source in Utah – Real Salt® comes from an underground deposit of ancient sea salt rather than being produced by evaporating water from modern oceans.
  • Minimal processing – Real Salt® is mined, crushed and graded by grain size without industrial refining or bleaching.
  • Transparency – Redmond makes the mineral analyses for Real Salt® and Redmond Clay® publicly available, along with documentation for selected certifications.
  • Simple formulations – the focus on simple, easy-to-understand ingredients extends across electrolytes, seasonings, protein nutrition and personal care.

Who is behind Redmond

Redmond was founded in 1958 by brothers Milo and Lamar Bosshardt, farmers from the town of Redmond in Utah. They knew about the salt beneath their land but initially had no reason to use it commercially. A period of drought changed this, prompting them to look for another way to provide financially for their families. The underground deposit then became the foundation of a new business.

The Bosshardt family developed the company over the following decades. In the early 1990s, Rhett Roberts joined the business, first as a consultant and then as general manager. He later bought Redmond and now serves as CEO of Redmond Inc. Under his leadership, the original business expanded into other areas. Roberts is also the founder of Redmond Heritage Farms, which develops the concept of traditional, minimally processed farm foods.

Brand vision

Redmond aims to create products and environments that encourage people to make more considered everyday choices. The brand bases its approach on four areas: Real Ingredients, Elevated Human Experience, Intentional Living and Ongoing Evolution.

The first of these is directly reflected in its products. Redmond prioritises simple, clean and real ingredients and formulations that can be explained clearly. This principle has gradually extended from Real Salt® to electrolytes, seasonings, protein nutrition and personal care.

Intentional Living takes a broader view of everyday life: thinking consciously about what you use, what you eat and the habits you develop. Ongoing Evolution reflects the brand’s willingness to keep learning and improving both its products and the way it operates.

This approach also includes specific environmental and community initiatives. The Redmond Life Green Team works on areas such as reducing single-use plastics, cutting waste in shipping and developing recycling.

Brand mission

Redmond’s mission is to create products and experiences that encourage people to live more intentionally. In practice, the brand links this approach primarily with simple, real ingredients, transparency and ongoing product improvement.

This philosophy is particularly clear in Real Salt®. The salt comes from Redmond’s own underground source in Utah and is neither industrially refined nor bleached. It therefore retains the natural mineral character of the original deposit.

Re-Lyte® brings the mineral base of Real Salt® into electrolyte hydration. Seasoning blends extend its culinary use, while the newer Roots and Earthpaste ranges show how Redmond applies the same philosophy to protein nutrition and personal care.

Redmond therefore does not define itself solely as a salt producer. Real Salt® remains its historical foundation, but the current range is connected by a broader principle: knowing the origin of key ingredients, using straightforward formulations and avoiding unnecessary processing.

What are Real Salt® and Re-Lyte®, and what do they offer?

Real Salt® is an unrefined salt mined from an underground deposit in Utah, USA. It is not produced by evaporating modern seawater and is neither chemically refined nor bleached after mining. Alongside sodium chloride, it naturally contains other mineral elements that contribute to its characteristic colour and taste.

According to the available analytical data, sodium chloride makes up approximately 91–96 % by weight of Real Salt®. Its mineral profile includes calcium, potassium, magnesium and iron, among others, and the manufacturer reports more than 60 naturally occurring trace elements.

From a nutritional perspective, however, Real Salt® should primarily be regarded as salt, and therefore a source of sodium and chloride. The presence of dozens of trace elements does not mean that a typical serving of salt provides nutritionally significant amounts of all these minerals.

Real Salt® also contains only naturally occurring trace amounts of iodine. It is therefore not equivalent to iodised salt where salt is intended to provide a significant source of iodine in the diet.

Re-Lyte® is an electrolyte range based on the mineral foundation of Real Salt®. The current range includes several formulations for different uses, so it is important to check the ingredients of the specific variant.

The core Re-Lyte® Hydration formula is for replenishing electrolytes, for example during physical activity and heavier sweating. The formula combines sodium with other electrolytes; for magnesium, the manufacturer uses malate and bisglycinate.

For customers monitoring their carbohydrate intake, an important feature is the no added sugar formulation. Individual flavours and variants may differ, however, so it is worth checking the current label for the specific product.

Real Salt® and Re-Lyte® therefore serve different roles: the former is primarily a culinary salt, while the latter is a purposefully formulated electrolyte blend.

Redmond certifications and quality

Redmond’s quality control is based on knowing the origin of its key mineral resources and publishing analytical documentation. The manufacturer provides separate mineral analyses for Real Salt® and Redmond Clay®, along with other documents relating to safety and certifications. This transparency matters for natural mineral materials because it provides specific measured values rather than general claims about purity.

Real Salt® is OMRI Listed, allowing it to be used in certified organic production or food processing under the USDA National Organic Program rules. Redmond also publishes documentation for its Kosher certification. With the newer Roots range, the manufacturer has extended independent verification to protein nutrition: Roots Protein has received Informed Protein and Informed Choice certifications, covering verification of declared protein content, manufacturing standards and testing for banned substances.

Why choose Redmond: quality, purity, verified safety

Real Salt – nerafinovaná sůl z podzemního ložiska v Utahu

The natural mineral profile of Real Salt®

Real Salt® comes from an underground deposit in central Utah, rather than from a modern ocean. Its origin is therefore fundamentally different from salts produced by evaporating present-day seawater.

After mining, the salt is mechanically processed and graded by crystal size. Redmond offers it in forms ranging from very fine through standard cooking salt to coarse crystals and Kosher Salt. The base ingredient is neither chemically refined nor bleached.

Real Salt® is therefore not perfectly white. Individual crystals may have pink, reddish or other natural tones associated with the mineral composition of the deposit.

What makes the difference

A practical distinction of Redmond’s own underground source is the traceable origin of the key ingredient. Real Salt® is directly linked to a specific deposit in Utah, and Redmond publishes its elemental analysis.

The same unrefined salt is available in several grain sizes depending on whether you need it for everyday cooking, baking, seasoning finished dishes or using in a grinder. Real Salt® also forms the basis of seasoning blends and other culinary products.

For electrolyte hydration, the brand has a separate Re-Lyte® range that combines sodium with other electrolytes. Real Salt® itself should therefore not automatically be treated as a complete electrolyte blend.

What makes Redmond products different

Redmond’s main distinction lies in combining long-standing experience with its own mineral resources and gradual expansion into other categories without moving away from the principle of simple, straightforward formulations.

Real Salt® is the original foundation of the brand. Re-Lyte® uses it in electrolyte products, while Seasonings extend its culinary use into seasoning blends. Redmond Clay® uses bentonite clay, and Earthpaste® incorporates it into oral care.

The range has gradually expanded to include Roots and Leaf. Roots Protein offers protein nutrition based on whey protein and a simple formulation, while Leaf develops the area of everyday personal care.

Another distinct part of the Redmond story is Redmond Clay®. This natural bentonite clay, also known as montmorillonite, is mined by the brand from its own deposit near its salt mine by Redmond, Utah. Its origins lie in ancient volcanic activity in the area: the material formed through the weathering of volcanic ash deposited millions of years ago. Redmond states that the local clay naturally contains both calcium and sodium, along with other trace mineral elements.

Bentonite clay appears not only as standalone Redmond Clay®, but also in other products from the brand. It is, for example, one of the core mineral ingredients in Earthpaste® oral care, while Redmond also draws on its experience with salt and clay in the newer Leaf range. Salt and bentonite clay are therefore the two original mineral resources from which Redmond’s broader present-day range has gradually developed.
