Scientific studies have shown that the essential oils contained in the flowers and leaves of plants provide natural protection against insects. Since aroma is a form of communication in the botanical realm, and each plant contains hundreds of chemicals, each plant species can be said to send specific messages to its surroundings.

 

The attractive aroma attracts e.g. pollinating insects and the repellent aroma is intended to deter unwanted insects. What can lure insects away from the plant is exactly what works in a natural "human" repellent. Action of repellents

• No repellent can stay active all day.
• Repellent application should be repeated according to personal need and depending on the environment.
• The activity of the repellent is reduced by the temperature of the environment (e.g. a temperature higher by 10 degrees can reduce the effect of the repellent by up to 50%), sweating, bathing, rain.
• The reliability and duration of action of the repellent depends on the method of application, the rate of evaporation and absorption by the skin and, in particular, the chosen concentration of the active substance.
• The more concentrated the substance, the longer the repellent will last (but it will not have a stronger repellent effect!).

Main active ingredients

Active ingredients - Total 6.25%

Wild Rosemary Essential Oil - 2.5% - the aroma of rosemary is very unpleasant to ticks and fleas. A horizontal petri dish test showed that the three molecules contained in rosemary or mace oil repel ticks (Dermacentor variabilis) more effectively than DEET.

Clove oil - 1.7% - In a study published in February in the journal Scientific Reports, researchers showed that eugenol (the main component in clove oil) has a lasting and safe effect against the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which spreads viruses that cause dengue fever, yellow fever, chikungunya and zika.

African geranium essential oil - 1.25% - has a delicately fresh, floral yet intense scent that repels insects and parasites. Calms, relaxes, harmonizes, stabilizes and improves mood. Compositionally, it fits right in with the EOs of rosemary, lemon and lavender, all of which can be found in Herbal Protec-X.

Lemongrass essential oil - 0.8% - Lemongrass contains natural substances that have insecticidal and repellent properties. Citronella is one of the main active ingredients in lemongrass, which repels mosquitoes. It is a volatile oil that is commonly used in candles, sprays and lotions to repel mosquitoes. Lemongrass also contains other volatile oils such as geraniol, limonene and citral, which repel mosquitoes.

Inert substances:

Filtered water - forms the base of the micellised mixture (water soluble, thus increasing its absorbability).

Wild oregano essential oil - the main components of oregano essential oil are carvacrol and thymol. These may have antimicrobial properties. In a 2019 laboratory study, carvacrol and thymol prevented the growth of various strains of Staphyloccus aureus (S. aureus) bacteria in meat and dairy products, suggesting they could help control the growth of the bacteria in food. Oregano oil is therefore added to the repellent as a natural preservative.

Wild bay leaf essential oil - bay leaves are an effective natural repellent that can repel a variety of insects including: cockroaches, flies, mosquitoes, spiders, ants, silverfish (insects that love damp, poorly lit and cool places - very often found in basements, closets, under sinks or even in bathrooms).

Essential oil of true lavender - in terms of chemical composition, lavender essential oil is very complex - it consists of more than 150 substances. The active substances in lavender are essential oils, tannins, anthocyanins, bitter substances and resins. When rubbed into the skin, the oil is absorbed very quickly and can be detected in the blood in as little as 5 minutes.  It is obviously an excellent insect repellent, we all know that lavender is not liked by moths, but also by other insects such as mosquitoes. Lavender alone partially repels insects, but it works better if mixed with lemongrass in a similar ratio.

Juniper essential oil - added as an antioxidant, but like lemongrass, the scent of juniper can naturally repel insects like ticks, according to scientific research. It has been found that essential oils like juniper can affect tick reproduction in vitro by inhibiting egg laying and hatching.

Cumin Essential Oil - A study reports the potential of essential oil (EO) from cumin seeds (Cuminum cyminum) as a plant-based means of increasing shelf life against fungal and aflatoxin contamination and lipid peroxidation. EO has demonstrated efficacy as a preservative in food systems (stored wheat and chickpeas).
