Dried corn drinks have been used in Peru since the Aztecs. The grains have their typical deep purple colour due to their high content of antioxidant pigments known as anthocyanins.

Killer of free radicals

Purple corn is the richest source of anthocyanins in the world, containing up to 10 times more than blueberries. Tests have also shown that this corn is a much better free radical 'killer' than fruit.

The most abundant anthocyanin is C3G (cyanidin-3-glucoside), which is also found in blackberries and blood oranges. C3G is so powerful that it helps block free radicals in the body after it has been exposed to dangerous chemicals.

In one study, this pigment stopped chemically induced damage in the livers of experimental animals.

A 2004 study published in "The Journal of Nutrition" found that one particular anthocyanin found in purple corn - CG3 - has the potential to fight obesity and diabetes. CG3 is reported to be one of the most potent antioxidants in existence - when tested against 13 other anthocyanins in the ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) test, which tests antioxidant activity, it clearly led.

• 1 or more teaspoons of this mixture

• 1 cup of organic milk of your choice (plant or animal)

• Sweeten as desired with either raw honey or jakon syrup

Heat the milk over low heat, add the corn drink mixture, and whisk until the mixture is completely dissolved. You can consume hot, warm or cold.

Recipe for Corn Drink 2

1 teaspoon of this mixture

240ml hot water

1/4 teaspoon coconut oil

1/4 teaspoon RAW honey

Mix everything.
