Nicotinamide riboside belongs to the family of compounds associated with vitamin B3. Scientists study it as one of the starting materials for the coenzyme NAD+. Zinc and vitamin B1 are additional ingredients, with their amounts listed separately. Their functions and quantities are set out below.
What does nicotinamide riboside mean?
- Nicotinamide is a form of vitamin B3. “Riboside” refers to the ribose attached to it. Together, the words describe a single molecule rather than a loose mixture of two ingredients.
- Ribose is a five-carbon sugar. It forms part of the chemical structure of NR. Nicotinamide on its own and nicotinamide riboside are therefore distinct substances.

What is NR, and how is it related to NAD+?
NAD+ is a coenzyme: a small molecule that works with enzymes. Its full name is nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. In biochemistry, it appears in reactions involved in processing carbohydrates, fats and proteins.
NAD+ and NADH are two forms of the same carrier. NAD+ becomes NADH when it accepts electrons; donating those electrons can turn it back into NAD+. Scientific texts describe these as the oxidised form (NAD+) and the reduced form (NADH).
NR is one of the substances cells can use to make NAD+. In one established enzyme pathway, NR is first converted to nicotinamide mononucleotide, or NMN, and then to NAD+. This is why it is called a precursor: a starting material used to form another compound.

How do NR powder, capsules and niacinamide differ?
- Exploring different forms of vitamin B3? Niacin is an umbrella term covering nicotinamide and nicotinic acid, among other related compounds. Nicotinamide is also called niacinamide. Metabolics niacinamide capsules therefore provide a different form of B3 from NR.
- Choosing between the two L Cell NR formats? The powder has no capsule shell and needs measuring. Capsules divide the contents into individual HPMC shells. Their declared daily NR quantities also differ, so this is more than the same formula in different packaging.

Why does the formula contain zinc and vitamin B1?
- Zinc: protection of cells from oxidative stress. Zinc also contributes to normal immune system function and normal cognitive function. It is declared separately as a mineral in this formula.
- Vitamin B1: energy-yielding metabolism and the nervous system. Thiamine contributes to their normal function, as well as normal psychological function and normal heart function. What does its active form do?
- 15% of the NRV for each nutrient. This percentage expresses the amount relative to that nutrient’s reference intake. Zinc and B1 have different reference values, so the same percentage corresponds to different weights in milligrams.
- These benefits belong to zinc and thiamine. The table lists them separately from NR, making clear which ingredient each piece of information concerns.

NR frequently asked questions
Why do we not make health claims for NR itself when studies exist?
A published study and an authorised health claim are different things. A study investigates a particular question in a defined group and under specific conditions. A food supplement’s sales description must also comply with European rules: a health claim must be authorised, and the product must meet its conditions of use. Publication alone therefore does not permit promises of rejuvenation, DNA repair or another health benefit from NR.
We distinguish general information about NR biochemistry from the benefits of individual nutrients. This description gives the authorised functions of zinc and vitamin B1 and attributes them clearly to those ingredients. We do not transfer them to NR or the complete combination. Nor does a change in a laboratory marker, such as NAD+, establish a particular health benefit from this product.
What is the chemical difference between NR and NMN?
NMN has an additional phosphate group compared with NR. NR is nicotinamide riboside; NMN is nicotinamide mononucleotide. This is a difference in molecular structure, rather than another trade name. Their connection in NAD+ synthesis does not provide a rule for converting the doses of two different supplements.
Why does the NR formula also contain vitamin B1?
B1 supplies a nutrient with its own well-established function. The body converts it into thiamine diphosphate, a cofactor for enzymes involved in processing nutrients such as carbohydrates. This relates to B1’s authorised contribution to normal energy-yielding metabolism.
Its role differs from that of NR, a precursor to NAD+. Two substances can both relate to metabolism while doing different jobs. This connection does not establish that added B1 improves NR absorption; the available documentation does not explain the specific reason for choosing this combination.
Is this NR liposomal?
A liposomal formulation is not documented for this product. Liposomes are tiny vesicles with a lipid bilayer; the term describes how a formula is prepared. It is not another word for fine powder, high purity or a capsule. The available L Cell NR ingredients do not list phospholipids, and the documentation does not describe liposomal technology.
Why does a scoop use millilitres while the table uses milligrams?
Millilitres measure volume; milligrams measure mass. Equal-sized scoops of different powders need not weigh the same: density, particle size and how the scoop is filled all matter. Use the scoop supplied with NR rather than one from another supplement. The figures in ml and mg cannot be exchanged on a one-to-one basis.
Does this formula contain caffeine?
Caffeine is not a listed ingredient in this formula. NR is a different substance from caffeine. Nor does vitamin B1’s contribution to “energy-yielding metabolism” mean that the supplement contains a coffee or tea stimulant.
Is 98% purity the same measurement as the amount of NR per dose?
No. Purity and quantity per dose answer different questions. Purity describes the proportion of a substance in the raw material analysed. Milligrams in the table express the declared content in a specified number of scoops or capsules. Verifying purity requires the relevant raw-material assay; a heavy-metals report cannot replace it. We do not use the declared percentage to calculate different dosing instructions.
What was actually measured in the attached laboratory reports?
One report examines heavy metals; the other examines microbiological parameters. The metals report lists lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic. Its raw-material sample is identified as nicotinamide riboside chloride. The other file contains microbiological tests, although its filename refers to mycotoxins. These are defined tests of the sample identified; batch traceability is needed to connect the results to a retail pack.
