What to compare in a fluoride-free toothpaste
- Cleaning base – calcium carbonate, bentonite clay and hydroxyapatite perform different technological roles within a formula.
- Abrasivity – it cannot be judged reliably from the mineral name alone; particle size, shape and concentration also matter. If the manufacturer publishes an RDA value, it can be useful for comparison.
- Foaming – SLS is not required for mechanical cleaning. Some formulas produce a light foam, while others barely foam at all.
- Age and individual needs – for children's toothpaste, check the recommended age and the amount used for brushing. If a child has a higher risk of tooth decay, follow their dentist's advice.
