Why it’s Pravé Bio
Fruity Fun is the reformulated version of the original Kid-e-Kare Strawberry children’s toothpaste, which we stocked at Pravé Bio for years. The calcium-carbonate mineral base and the distinctive blend of botanical oils and extracts remain. Like the original Kid-e-Kare, Fruity Fun is fluoride-free and glycerin-free.
The new formula puts far more emphasis on strawberry. Organic strawberry flavour and freeze-dried organic strawberry powder made from real strawberries now sit third and fourth in the ingredient list, while Oregano P73 has moved from fourth place in the previous formula to seventeenth. Stevia has been replaced with organic monk fruit, and new ingredients help build the paste’s texture and consistency.
Ten of the nineteen ingredients are marked Organic on the current label. Fruity Fun keeps the mineral-and-botanical foundation of the original Kid-e-Kare, but strawberry now plays a much more prominent role.

The details
Fruity Fun is a fluoride-free strawberry toothpaste for children, designed for everyday brushing. Calcium carbonate is the main cleaning mineral. The formula contains no SLS or glycerin; stevia has been replaced with organic monk fruit, while organic strawberry flavour and strawberry powder now appear far higher in the ingredient list than in the original Kid-e-Kare Strawberry. Oregano P73 and the other botanical oils remain towards the end of the formula.
Calcium carbonate as the cleaning base
Calcium carbonate is the second ingredient after water and the main mineral cleaning base. Its particles help mechanically remove surface plaque and staining as the toothbrush moves over the teeth.
Calcium carbonate does not replace fluoride; it has a different role in the formula. Fruity Fun’s RDA value is not available, so we do not describe it as low-abrasion. Abrasivity depends not only on the mineral itself but also on particle size, shape and concentration in the finished toothpaste.
SLS-free toothpaste: why Fruity Fun still foams lightly
SLS (sodium lauryl sulphate) is a surfactant commonly used to create foam in toothpaste. Fruity Fun does not contain it. The amount of foam does not determine how well a toothpaste cleans.
So why can an SLS-free toothpaste still foam? Brushing introduces air into the paste. Cellulose, organic guar gum and xanthan gum do not create foam themselves; they thicken the formula, allowing small air bubbles to remain briefly. The result is a light, short-lived foam rather than the more pronounced lather typical of SLS formulas.
Organic monk fruit instead of stevia: sweetness without added sugar
Stevia in the original formula has been replaced with organic monk fruit extract. This Asian fruit contains mogrosides with an intensely sweet taste, so only a small amount is needed and no added sugar is required.
Organic strawberry flavour and freeze-dried organic strawberry powder made from real strawberries now sit third and fourth in the new formula. The powder is made from real strawberries that have been freeze-dried.
The word “flavour” alone does not reveal the exact composition of a flavour blend. The Organic designation does mean that organic-flavour rules apply to this ingredient. The manufacturer does not publish the full composition of the organic strawberry flavour; the freeze-dried powder, by contrast, is documented as coming from real strawberries.
To us, the flavour is distinctly strawberry-led, with the herbal notes sitting in the background.
No glycerin: how the texture is built
Glycerin is commonly used as a humectant in toothpaste. Fruity Fun does not contain it. Its consistency is built from cellulose, organic guar gum and xanthan gum alongside water, mineral particles and oils.
The result is a paste that stays on the brush, does not run and spreads easily over the teeth while brushing. Olive and coconut oils form the oil phase alongside the aromatic botanical oils.
The adult OregaFRESH toothpaste from NAHS is also glycerin-free; compared with Fruity Fun, it has a much more pronounced mint-and-herb flavour.
Oregano P73 and botanical oils
Oregano P73 is only the seventeenth ingredient in the new formula, so it is not the cleaning base of the toothpaste. Together with sage, geranium, eucalyptus and clove, it forms part of the aromatic botanical phase.
Alongside its aromatic role, P73 may also contribute to the microbiological stability of the formula. Oregano oil naturally contains carvacrol and other phenolic compounds with antimicrobial properties; clove oil contains eugenol. Without the manufacturer’s specification and a preservative challenge test, however, it is not possible to determine how much these oils contribute to preservation of the finished toothpaste.
OregaDENT is an oil blend for local use on teeth and gums, combining Oregano P73, clove, cinnamon and olive oil.

The label uses common ingredient names rather than INCI nomenclature.

The current formula contains no fluoride, glycerin, SLS or stevia, and no added sugar.
How to use
Apply a small amount to a toothbrush and brush thoroughly at least twice daily, or as advised by a dentist. Supervise younger children while brushing.
For children at higher risk of tooth decay, follow professional dental advice when choosing between fluoride and fluoride-free toothpaste.
Pravé Bio × North American Herb & Spice: our story
We came across North American Herb & Spice by chance in London in 2015. We were looking for a high-quality oregano oil because of an illness and found Oreganol P73. Once we understood where the oregano came from and had a good experience with Oreganol ourselves, we began looking into the brand in much more detail and wanted to stock it in our then UK-based online shop. When Pravé Bio was later launched in the Czech Republic, North American Herb & Spice became part of that range too.
- Judy K. Gray, M.S., founded North American Herb & Spice in 1999. She has developed more than 400 formulations for NAHS and its professional Physician’s Strength range. She is also the author of Kids Need Care.
- Dr Cass Ingram also contributed to oregano-oil research. He co-authored a 2001 study on oregano oil with Judy Gray and a team from Georgetown University. He also wrote about wild oregano in The Cure Is in the Cupboard and The Respiratory Solution.
- In-house R&D. NAHS has its own research and development team, formulators and other specialists. Judy Gray remains personally involved in ingredient selection and the development of key formulas, and oversees triple product testing. The brand does not simply buy ready-made formulas from a contract manufacturer.
- Manufactured in Lake Forest, near Chicago. Production takes place at NAHS’s own facility at 13900 W. Polo Trail Drive, Lake Forest, Illinois; liquid products are filled there too. Raw materials and finished batches are checked for identity, selected constituents and unwanted contaminants. The facility is certified for organic production and also holds Kosher and Halal certification.
- The wild oregano used for P73 comes from the high mountains of Turkey. It is hand-harvested in remote mountain areas, where it grows at elevations of up to approximately 3,650 m. NAHS uses its own blend of selected edible oregano species for P73. Oreganol P73 has been on the market since 1998.

Frequently asked questions
Should children use fluoride or fluoride-free toothpaste?
Fluoride toothpaste has well-established evidence for helping to prevent dental caries. The EAPD recommends 1,000 ppm fluoride from the eruption of the first tooth to age two in a rice-grain amount, and the same concentration from age two to six in a small pea-sized amount.
Fruity Fun is a fluoride-free children’s toothpaste. For a child with increased caries risk, the dentist’s recommendation should take priority.
Fluorine-free or fluoride-free toothpaste: what is the difference?
Fluorine is the chemical element; fluoride is its ionic form. Fluorides are what are used in toothpaste, so “fluoride-free toothpaste” is the technically correct term. Fruity Fun does not contain fluoride.
What is SLS, and why does Fruity Fun still foam lightly?
SLS, or sodium lauryl sulphate, is a surfactant that creates a stronger, more stable foam. Fruity Fun does not contain it. Brushing introduces air into the paste; guar and xanthan gums do not create foam themselves, but they thicken the formula enough for small air bubbles to remain briefly.
A systematic review in people with recurrent aphthous ulcers found fewer ulcers, shorter duration and less pain with SLS-free toothpastes, while also noting that more high-quality research is needed. This relates to SLS in general, not to a therapeutic effect of Fruity Fun.
How abrasive is Fruity Fun, and what does RDA mean?
RDA is a laboratory measure of a toothpaste’s relative dentin abrasivity. Fruity Fun’s RDA value is not available, so we do not describe it as low-abrasion.
Calcium carbonate is the main cleaning particle, but final abrasivity also depends on the size, shape and amount of particles in the complete formula. We have used it ourselves around sensitive tooth necks and it does not feel coarse to us during brushing.
What is monk fruit, and why did it replace stevia?
Monk fruit (Siraitia grosvenorii) comes from southern China. Its extract contains mogrosides that give it an intensely sweet taste; depending on concentration, an extract can be roughly 100–250 times sweeter than sugar.
Only a very small amount is therefore needed. In the new Fruity Fun formula, organic monk fruit extract replaces stevia.
Is Fruity Fun organic?
We do not describe Fruity Fun as a certified organic toothpaste. Ten of the nineteen ingredients are marked Organic on the current label. That designation applies to those individual ingredients, not to certification of the finished toothpaste.
How is Fruity Fun different from the original Kid-e-Kare Strawberry?
Fruity Fun has been reformulated. Calcium carbonate remains the main cleaning ingredient, but stevia has been replaced by organic monk fruit, and organic coconut oil, organic citric acid, cellulose, organic guar gum and xanthan gum have been added.
Strawberry flavour and strawberry powder are now the third and fourth ingredients, while Oregano P73 has moved to seventeenth place. In our own use, strawberry is much more prominent and the herbal notes stay in the background.

Laboratory studies have examined oregano, clove and other essential oils in experimental and formulated toothpastes. Their antimicrobial activity supports the interpretation that these oils may contribute to formula stability, but it does not establish a preservative role in the finished Fruity Fun toothpaste.

Rhatany and papaya
Rhatany root contains tannins and proanthocyanidins, which account for its astringent character. Fruity Fun also contains papaya extract; however, the label does not specify standardised papain or its amount, so no enzymatic effect of the finished toothpaste can be inferred from this ingredient.
