Why Black Seed Plus is Pravé Bio

Our interest in black seed goes beyond thymoquinone. North American Herb & Spice shares that interest in the plant’s wider composition. Black Seed Plus uses ground black seed with cumin, red sour grape and sumac: seeds and fruits with different aromatic compounds and polyphenols.

Origin and processing matter equally. The black seed and cumin come from the Mediterranean, where both have a long history as spices. Variety, soil, climate and harvest all influence the composition of a seed. Its botanical name is only part of the story.

The wholefood approach keeps naturally occurring constituents together. Ground seeds retain their fat alongside fibre and other solids; grape and sumac add constituents from the fruits. That breadth is why we chose Black Seed Plus. We look at the ingredients, their origins and how they are processed, rather than judge the blend by a single compound.

Black seed: a long history in a small seed

  • Black seed holds a particular place in Arabic tradition. References appear in the hadith, collections of sayings and traditions associated with the Prophet Muhammad. Its cultural significance long predates today’s food supplements.
  • Black seed, black cumin, Nigella sativa. These names can refer to the same plant. Despite the common name, it is botanically distinct from both cumin and caraway.
  • Its history in Anatolia reaches back to the Hittites. Researchers identified black seeds in a vessel from Boyalı Höyük dated to around 1650 BC — evidence of its long presence in what is now Turkey.

Choosing black seed capsules? Black Seed Plus contains ground seeds and fruit powders. Our FAQ explains how it differs from oil-filled capsules.

Inside the seed: thymoquinone & more

A seed’s constituents are not evenly distributed. Research on black seed found thymoquinone and other aromatic compounds predominantly in the seed coat, while amino acids and some organic acids were more abundant in the inner tissues. There is considerably more to the seed’s composition than thymoquinone alone.

Ground seeds include both the coat and the inner tissues. Their natural fat remains alongside solid material, including fibre. Pressing separates out the oil, leaving much of the solid material in the press cake. The two processes yield different ingredients.

A thymoquinone figure cannot describe the whole preparation. The part of the plant used and the processing method determine which other constituents reach the finished supplement. Those distinctions matter when choosing between seed powder, pressed oil and an extract.

How ripening and milling affect the seed
  • The aromatic profile changes as seeds mature. Research has tracked changes in black seed’s volatile compounds, including thymoquinone, during ripening. Harvest maturity matters alongside where the seed was grown.
  • Milling exposes more of the material to air. Keep the bottle closed and protect it from heat, moisture and direct sunlight. If opening a capsule, add its contents to food just before eating.

What cumin, grape & sumac add

Each botanical has a different chemical profile. Here, aromatic seeds sit alongside tart fruits familiar from Mediterranean cooking.

  • Black seed (Nigella sativa) contains natural fat and aromatic compounds, including thymoquinone. Also known as black cumin, it is botanically distinct from cumin.
  • Cumin (Cuminum cyminum) has its own essential oil, characterised by cuminaldehyde. It adds a different set of aromatic compounds to the blend.
  • Red sour grape is included as a fruit powder, with naturally occurring organic acids and polyphenols, rather than isolated resveratrol.
  • Sumac (Rhus coriaria) is a spice made from the fruit. Researchers have identified tannins and flavonoids among its polyphenols. Alongside grape, it lends the powder a tart flavour.

Two capsules contain 1,400 mg of the complete botanical blend. Individual ingredient amounts and levels of thymoquinone or polyphenols are not declared separately.

Which form of black seed suits you?

Black Seed Plus contains ground seeds and fruit powders in a plant-based capsule. The filling includes the seeds’ solid material as well as their fat. You can also open the capsule and stir the aromatic powder into food.

Black Seed Oil softgels have a liquid five-oil filling and a fish gelatine shell. For a single-ingredient pressed oil measured by the teaspoon, compare 100% Pure Black Seed Oil.

Absorb-Max TQ emulsified drops are a preparation for adding to drinks. Emulsification allows the oil to disperse in the liquid. Their ingredients and directions differ from those of Black Seed Plus.

How to add the capsule contents to food
  • You can open the capsules and stir the powder into food. Try the recommended daily dose in a little savoury spread or yoghurt dip, where its aromatic, tangy flavour can work as a seasoning.
  • Use a small amount of food to start with. This makes it easier to eat the full measured dose and decide whether you like the flavour. Opening the capsules does not change the recommended daily dose.
Can you stir the powder into water?
  • Ground plant material does not dissolve completely in water. Some particles may remain suspended or settle at the bottom; this is not a soluble extract.
  • Emulsified drops are another option for drinks. Absorb-Max TQ contains emulsified oil and has its own ingredients and directions. Its dose is different from that of Black Seed Plus powder.
What the milligrams on the label measure
  • The 1,400 mg in Black Seed Plus covers all four botanicals. It includes natural fat and solid material, rather than measuring black seed alone or an equivalent quantity of extracted oil.
  • An oil capsule declares the weight of its oil filling. Equal weights of powder and oil do not contain equal amounts of the same constituents. Compare the preparation and ingredients alongside the number of milligrams.
Capsules & gummies: what changes with the format?
  • A capsule keeps its filling separate from its shell. Black Seed Plus has a botanical filling enclosed in cellulose. In a gummy, botanical ingredients are incorporated into a gel that must also hold its shape, taste acceptable and remain stable.
  • Compare the botanical quantities per daily dose. Part of a gummy’s weight comes from gelling ingredients and other components; a capsule’s declared blend weight usually refers to its filling. Total product weight alone does not tell you how much botanical material it contains.
  • The preparations may differ too. Establish whether the ingredient is ground seed, pressed oil or an extract before comparing quantities or directions.

North American Herb & Spice: expertise & in-house manufacturing

North American Herb & SpiceFrom ingredient to finished supplement

NAHS develops and manufactures its own supplements. Founder Judy K. Gray remains personally involved in sourcing and formulation, working with the brand’s development, manufacturing and quality-control teams.

Oregano was just the beginning

The range began with Oreganol P73. Judy K. Gray has since developed more than 400 formulas for NAHS and its sister brand, Physician’s Strength, which has a separate range for healthcare practitioners.

The wholefood approach

NAHS aims to retain naturally occurring compounds together. For pressed oils, that means considering the seed’s accompanying compounds as well as its fatty acids; for oregano, the essential oil’s wider aromatic profile. The plant and the part used determine how it is processed.

Beyond oregano

Black seed, turmeric, chaga and wild berries sit alongside fish oils in the range. They appear in capsules, drops, powders and drink blends, each with its own ingredients and directions.

Long-standing relationships at source

NAHS works with established local partners and harvesters. Its wild oregano is picked by hand in the Turkish mountains; other ingredients come from regions including Peru and northern Canada. Knowledge of local plants, harvests and growing conditions informs both ingredient selection and processing.

More than a buying relationship

NAHS has helped fund wells, schools and community facilities. Its Strong Community Causes programme also supports selected projects nominated by customers.

In-house research & development

The development team selects the ingredients, extracts and any carriers for each formula. It also determines the final format, from liquid oils to capsules and powders.

Made in Lake Forest, Illinois

NAHS has its own manufacturing facilities in Lake Forest, near Chicago. Liquid products are bottled on site under the supervision of the quality-control team.

Checks at both ends of production

Incoming ingredients and finished products are tested for identity, levels of selected constituents and unwanted impurities. Quality control continues beyond receipt of the raw material.

Processing to suit the ingredient

Cold pressing, steam distillation, CO₂ extraction, juicing and milling serve different purposes. Seeds yield pressed oils, while distillation can separate essential oils from aromatic herbs.

Knowing the source

Long-standing partners and local harvesters connect NAHS with the places its ingredients come from. Both the plant species and its growing environment inform the choice of raw material.

GMP & facility certifications

Manufacturing follows GMP principles. The facility holds organic, Kosher and Halal certifications; these do not automatically apply to every individual product.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Black Seed Plus include cumin, grape and sumac?

The blend includes botanicals with different aromatic compounds and polyphenols. Black seed naturally contains thymoquinone; cumin has a distinct essential oil characterised by cuminaldehyde. Red sour grape and sumac add organic acids and polyphenols from the fruits. The label does not specify the amount of each individual constituent.

What does wholefood mean for Black Seed Plus?

NAHS uses ground plant ingredients that retain their naturally occurring constituents together. The seeds contribute solid material as well as fat. Wholefood describes this approach to ingredients and processing; it is not a numerical standardisation for thymoquinone or another selected compound.

What is the difference between Black Seed Oil and Black Seed Plus?

Plus contains ground seeds and fruit powders; Oil refers to preparations containing pressed black seed oil. The pure liquid oil is measured by the teaspoon, while Black Seed Oil softgels contain a five-oil blend. Look at the filling as well as the format: equal weights of these preparations do not have the same composition.

How many capsules should I take?

Take two capsules daily with food. Swallow with water, or open them and add the powder to food. This dose contains 1,400 mg of all four botanicals together, rather than 1,400 mg of black seed alone.

How long does a bottle last?

90 capsules last 45 days at the recommended daily dose. Each two-capsule dose contains 1,400 mg of the botanical blend.

How much thymoquinone is in a daily dose?

A separate thymoquinone amount is not declared. The 1,400 mg figure is the weight of the botanical blend. Determining its thymoquinone content would require an analysis of this preparation; a percentage given for a different black seed oil cannot be used to calculate it.

Are the capsules vegan?

Yes. The filling is botanical and the shell is made from cellulose. Shell materials vary across the range: NAHS Black Seed Oil softgels use fish gelatine instead.

Can I open the capsules and add the powder to food?

Yes, this is an intended use for Black Seed Plus. Stir the contents of the recommended two capsules into a small amount of food just before eating. Using a small amount makes it easier to eat the full dose without leaving powder in an unfinished meal.

What does the powder taste like?

Aromatic and savoury, with tartness from grape and sumac. Cumin adds its distinctive spicy aroma. Try the powder in a savoury spread or yoghurt dip. If you prefer to avoid the flavour, swallow the capsules intact with water.

Can I add the contents to water or a smoothie?

You can stir the powder into a smoothie, but it will not dissolve into a clear solution. Solid plant particles remain in the drink and may settle. For a liquid preparation intended for adding to water, compare Absorb-Max TQ emulsified drops, which have different ingredients and directions.

Are black seed and cumin the same plant?

No. This blend includes both as separate ingredients. Black seed is Nigella sativa, sometimes called black cumin. Cumin is Cuminum cyminum. The common names can be confusing, so the botanical names are useful when comparing labels.

Can children or pregnant or breastfeeding women take Black Seed Plus?

No dose has been established for children. Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, if taking medication or if you have a medical condition. Being able to open a capsule does not in itself establish suitability for a child.

What can black seed research tell us about this blend?

It helps explain seed composition and differences between preparations. Chemical studies show a range of constituents beyond thymoquinone, distributed differently within the seed. A study of pressed oil, an extract or isolated thymoquinone does not automatically establish the same effects for Black Seed Plus.

Is grape powder the same as a resveratrol extract?

Fruit powder retains a wider range of the grape’s natural constituents. A resveratrol extract targets a selected compound and may be standardised to a specified level. Black Seed Plus uses red sour grape powder; its resveratrol content is not quantified on the label.
