How to Choose Electrolytes: A Practical Guide

Electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium) are essential for fluid balance, neuromuscular function, and pH. Requirements vary with workload, temperature, and sweating—most people can cover needs with diet and water; electrolyte drinks are useful when fluid and mineral losses are higher (sport/heat, illness), or when you prefer a functional sugar-free beverage.

Electrolyte drinks for performance (60+ minutes)

For longer efforts, sodium in the drink is recommended (on the order of hundreds of mg/L)—it improves fluid retention and reduces the risk of hyponatremia; for endurance, carbohydrates are also added (typically 4–8 %). Follow the label and your own tolerance.

Glucose–electrolyte solutions

The combination of glucose and sodium uses intestinal cotransport and supports fluid absorption—hence their use for rehydration after illness or diarrhea. For routine exercise, simpler electrolyte drinks are often sufficient.

Caffeine-free and caffeinated

Within recommended doses, caffeine does not show a significant worsening of hydration; caffeinated drinks can suit “energy + hydration,” but mind your total daily caffeine intake.

How to Choose and Use (Practical)

  • Start with your goal: everyday drinking (preferably sugar-free) vs. endurance (sodium + carbohydrates as needed).
  • Monitor sodium: it is key for fluid retention during sweating; magnesium is useful but not the “main” player for acute rehydration.
  • Dosage and timing: drink to thirst and conditions; for longer efforts, replenish regularly in smaller volumes. 
  • Safety: excess electrolytes can be an issue—especially in people with hypertension, kidney disease, or unnecessary “oversalting.” Choose appropriately for the situation.

Recommended daily intakes of water and minerals are set by authorities such as EFSA; tailor your choice to your age, workload, and climate.

Are electrolytes always “better than water”?

Not always. Under normal conditions, water and a varied diet are sufficient; electrolyte drinks are helpful with higher sweat losses, prolonged exertion, or illness. Watch the composition (especially sodium) and avoid unnecessary sugar if performance is not your goal.

Does caffeine dehydrate you?

At usual intakes, no—current reviews do not show a significant deterioration of hydration with caffeinated drinks; what matters is total daily intake of fluids and caffeine.

When should I use an oral rehydration solution (ORS)?
