Water Kefir Maté – Kult Kefir

Lightly sparkling water kefir with an infusion of yerba maté, a traditional South American leaf. Refreshing herbal profile with a subtle tea-like bitterness. Best enjoyed chilled.

In taste, Kult Kefir resembles a refreshing dry lemonade. It is characterised by its sweet-sour balance and effervescence, reminiscent of the gentle bubbles of sparkling wine. It is a drink with significant health benefits, maintaining lightness and drinkability without a sticky mouthfeel.

The drink ferments naturally thanks to kefir crystals, which are yeasts and beneficial bacteria. The process typically takes 36–48 hours.

The final drink is pasteurised and mainly contains postbiotics that develop during fermentation.

Produced in Belgium in small batches. Organic, vegan, gluten-free. Discover other KULT Kefir flavours.

Why Drink Kult Kefir Beverages?

A functional alternative to regular lemonades and so-called "probiotic drinks". Artisan fermentation – not quick production of carbonated water; the drink mainly contains postbiotics.

  • Traditional water kefirstandard fermentation, natural effervescence, gentle pasteurisation for stability.
  • Postbiotics, not probiotics – after pasteurisation, live cultures do not remain; the drink mainly contains postbiotics formed during fermentation.
  • Lower residual sugar – compared to kombucha and most lemonades, there is less sugar.
  • Taste without aromas – pure herbal profile from the yerba maté infusion; without artificial aromas.
  • Artisan production – small batches, organic ingredients, hand quality control by a fermentation expert.
  • Everyday drinking – light, low-calorie, gentle on the stomach.

Looking for a comparison? Kombucha is often more sour and sweeter. Probiotic lemonade (ang. soda) is more like carbonated water with artificially added cultures.

Kult Kefir is a genuinely fermented drink with postbiotics and a pure composition, which is why it costs more and tastes completely different.

Water Kefir – Live Fermentation, Gentle Bubbles

Water kefir is made from kefir crystals (tibicos) – a symbiosis of yeasts and bacteria. During fermentation in a sugar solution, organic acids and natural bubbles are produced.

Kult Kefir ferments in small batches from organic ingredients for almost 2 days and uses freshly pressed juices (e.g., in the Passion Fruit and Hops flavour) without artificial aromas.

During fermentation, most of the cane sugar is converted into organic acids, giving the drink a mildly tangy taste and low residual sugar.

The drink is canned in recyclable aluminium cans (emphasising efficient recycling and protection from light). The brand was founded by bioengineer Mathilde Riga; the product and recipes are managed internally, but production takes place in Belgium in collaboration with a partner brewery in Antwerp.

Why Choose Kult Kefir

Kult Kefir brings a unique water kefir to the market – a lightly sparkling drink created by fermenting organic fruits and herbs. Thanks to the traditional mother culture and 48-hour maturation, it offers a natural taste, minimal sugar, and a wide range of organic acids – a perfect alternative to sweetened lemonades.

Behind the brand is a Belgian bioscience engineer, who started fermenting at home in the kitchen; today, kefir is produced in Brussels and Wavre, still in small batches to maintain the freshness and authentic aroma of each batch.

Kult Kefir relies on 100% natural ingredients, without artificial additives, and uses freshly pressed juices or herbal teas. The drink is rich in postbiotics, supports healthy digestion, and is packaged in fully recyclable aluminium cans that conserve resources.

FAQ

What exactly does Kult Kefír Maté taste like?

The taste is sparkling, sweet-sour and very refreshing, similar to a premium herbal lemonade. Thanks to yerba maté, you feel a gentle tea note and herbs, but without aggressive bitterness. It is a functional drink with huge health benefits of postbiotics, yet it tastes like a genuine lemonade.

Triangle

Can I drink Kult Kefír if I'm avoiding sugar?

Yes. Although organic cane sugar is added to the base, it serves solely as food for the fermentation culture. During 48 hours, bacteria and yeasts convert almost all of it into organic acids. The result is a drink with a very low glycaemic index.

Triangle

Does the drink contain alcohol and is it safe for drivers?

The drink is certified as non-alcoholic. It contains less than 0.1% alcohol, which is a natural residual effect of fermentation. For comparison: a ripe banana or apple juice may contain more alcohol. It is therefore completely safe for drivers and regular consumption.

Triangle

What is the difference between this kefir and kombucha?

Kombucha is fermented using a tea fungus (SCOBY) and is often more vinegary and sweeter. Water kefir (Kult) uses kefir crystals, has a milder flavour profile, lower sugar content, and is "drier" – thanks to pasteurisation, it is also flavour-stable in every can.

Triangle

Does Kult Kefir need to be refrigerated before opening?

Thanks to gentle pasteurisation, the drink is stable even at room temperature. However, to maintain the best flavour quality and refreshing crispness, we recommend storing in a cool place and serving chilled at 4–7 °C.

Triangle

Why is the drink in a can and not in glass?

An aluminium can is ideal for a fermented drink – it provides 100% protection from light (which could degrade antioxidants) and is the most recyclable packaging. The inner layer is BPA-free, so the drink does not come into contact with metal.

Triangle

What are postbiotics and why are they in the drink?

Postbiotics are beneficial substances (metabolites) that are produced during fermentation. They are heat-stable, so they survive pasteurisation and are ready for immediate use by your body to support the gut microbiome without the risk of bloating.

Triangle

Is the drink suitable for kids?

Yes, thanks to its pure organic composition without chemicals, it is a great alternative to overly sweetened juices. However, the Maté variant contains natural caffeine from tea and yerba maté, so for younger children, we recommend the fruit variants of Kult.

Triangle

Does the drink contain artificial colours?

Absolutely not. The colour of the drink is determined solely by natural ingredients – an infusion of maté, herbs, and blueberries. Kult Kefir does not use so-called "natural colours" (such as beet concentrates, etc.) unless they are part of the recipe for flavour.

Triangle

Why does sediment form at the bottom?

Sediment is a sign of genuine artisanal production. These are small particles of fruit, herbs, and remnants of the fermentation process. Before opening, gently turn the can upside down to mix the ingredients.

Triangle

What to buy with Maté Water Kefir?

  • ✔︎ Beef pieces with sea salt and porcini – a hearty protein snack to hand; perfectly contrasts with the light herbal profile of Maté and replenishes energy with a can of kefir.
  • ✔︎ Peanut crisps – light crunch for the afternoon kefir; peanuts provide a pleasant fullness and complement the gently tea-like taste of Maté.
  • ✔︎ PUR chewing gum – Peppermint – for fresh breath after a fermented drink; sugar-free, with xylitol and without aspartame.
  • ✔︎ Indonesian crackers Krupuk (cassava flour)light gluten-free crackers for sipping; a crunchy accompaniment that highlights the fresh character of Maté.

Who’s behind the Kult Kefir brand

The driving force behind Kult Kefir is Mathilde Riga, a passionate Belgian bioengineer who turned her love of the biological sciences into a delicious fermented drink. Her journey began in her own kitchen, where her mother passed on water kefir grains—and from that moment a vision was born. Blending home experiments with scientific expertise, she created a brand that pushes the boundaries of traditional fermentation.

During her experiments, Mathilde realised that everyday ingredients hold remarkable potential — and in October 2020 she “planted the seeds” of KULT. Since then, she has shaped a brand philosophy grounded in innovation, authenticity and the simple purity of ingredients. KULT emerges as a union of science and art, poured into every bottle that tells a story of passion, quality and nature’s wonder.

The Kult Kefir vision

The vision of Kult Kefir is to push the boundaries of taste and wellbeing and to craft uncompromising fermented drinks, where every sip tells a story of passion, innovation and nature’s wonders.

The brand invites you on a journey through fermentation—to experience KULT and discover something extraordinary in every sip.

It fulfils this vision by combining the biological sciences with the art of fermentation, emphasising authentic processes and honouring the mother culture and the cyclical passing on of kefir grains—from generation to generation.

In this way, Kult blends tradition and innovation into drinks that honour their natural origin and quality craftsmanship.

Kult Kefir brand vision
Origin of the Kult Kefir name

The name — how it came about and what it stands for

The word “culture” has its root in the Indo-European kwel, denoting a cyclical process.

The name KULT was chosen as a tribute to the unique relationship between water kefir and the idea of culture. Just as cultural heritage is passed from generation to generation, water kefir grains are handed on in an endless cycle.

It also points to the mother culture—the beneficial microorganisms that trigger the fermentation of every new batch.

What is a fermented lemonade?

A fermented lemonade is a naturally sparkling drink created when a culture (for example, water kefir grains) converts part of the sugar from water and fruit during fermentation into organic acids and gentle bubbles of carbon dioxide. The result is a refreshing beverage with lower residual sugar and a complex flavour—entirely different from ordinary sweetened sodas.

According to KULT Kefir, “water kefir is more than just lemonade”: it’s a traditional fermented drink made from fresh fruit and natural botanicals. The brand uses only real ingredients (with no artificial flavours or extracts), favours fresh, cold-pressed juices and ferments the kefir for almost two days to achieve an authentic flavour profile—a natural alternative to conventional sodas.

Fair production and wholesome lemonades

Kult Kefir production and ingredients

Production and ingredients

KULT lemonades are made in Belgium through artisanal production and in small batches—literally in a microbrewery in Brabant, enabling careful quality control and consistent flavour.

The brand adheres to an organic standard under the supervision of BE-BIO-01 (CERTISYS), the official Belgian organic certification recognised across the EU.

Thanks to its local, small-scale approach, KULT is an honest, authentic drink with a focus on ingredient origin and fair processing.

Flavouring relies on real ingredientsno artificial flavours or extracts. Kult works with a variety of herbs, prioritises fresh, cold-pressed juices and allows the kefir to ferment for almost two days to achieve an authentic flavour profile.

In practice this means recipes like ginger & lemon with a share of ginger and lemon juice, as well as no-sugar variants where a longer fermentation consumes all the sugarwith no sweeteners and no shortcuts.

Is the packaging eco-friendly?

Yes. KULT chooses aluminium cans as a deliberately eco-friendly pack: aluminium can be recycled repeatedly without loss of quality, it’s lightweight and stackable (lower transport emissions) and it also protects the drink better from light and oxygen; the interior has a BPA-free liner.

The brand also asks for proper sorting: cans go into the “blue” bin (metals) and—where glass is used—bottles go into the glass container without the cap. KULT explicitly notes that cans are better for the planet than single-use glass.
