Mullein (Verbascum Thapsus) – Glycerine Herbal Extract dry cough • 1,000 mg mullein leaf in 1 ml • alcohol-free • vegan • 50 ml

Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) is a robust biennial herb traditionally associated with respiratory care. In phytotherapy, its flowers and leaves are primarily used. This particular extract is made from the leaf, usually in the form of an infusion or macerate. A more concentrated form is the herbal extract. It is often a more practical choice, especially during increased respiratory strain, such as in colder months or in dusty environments. Mullein leaf contains mucilaginous polysaccharides, saponins, flavonoids, and other plant compounds.

Botanicals For Life offers agroecologically grown mullein as an alcohol-free glycerine extract 1:1 in drop form. 1 ml (approximately 20 drops) corresponds to about 1 g of dried leaf, which is equivalent to 5 g of fresh plant. The base consists of coconut-derived vegetable glycerine and purified water. The extract has a mild, naturally sweet taste and is a gentle alternative to alcohol-based tinctures. The bottle provides approximately 50 doses.

Why we included Botanicals For Life in the PraveBio.cz range

Botanicals For Life is a British brand of liquid herbal extracts, led by naturopaths. It works with herbs from certified organic and agroecological farms in Europe and India; for selected species, it also uses sustainable harvesting according to FairWild (an international certification and standard for sustainable wild plant harvesting).

The extracts are produced through a subsequent technological process: the dried herb is extracted, the alcohol is then removed by rotary evaporation, the extract is freeze-dried and re-dissolved in organic coconut glycerine and purified water. Compared to traditional alcohol tinctures, these extracts have a milder taste and, due to the absence of alcohol, are more acceptable for many people, including kids. They are therefore suitable for long-term use, while maintaining the strength of 1:1.

The brand places emphasis on full transparency: the origin of the herbs, extraction method, and usage context are stated directly on the packaging, including a QR code with extended information. We are the exclusive importer and distributor of the brand for the whole of Europe.

Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) – Glycerin Herbal Extract

The base of the liquid mullein extract consists of plant-based glycerin from coconut and purified water. Coconut glycerin is suitable for long-term use, and its naturally sweet tone softens the taste of the extract. The resulting taste remains distinctly herbal (without added aromas), but is milder than a traditional alcohol tincture. This is a non-alcoholic variant of the extract.

In phytotherapy, mullein is among herbs associated with respiratory care. The glycerin form is suitable for those who cannot or do not wish to consume alcohol, or who find the strong alcohol taste of tinctures unsuitable.

Mullein has a long tradition among herbalists and naturopaths, but the European Union does not allow any health claims to be made about this herb, so further information must be sought independently.

The extract ratio is 1:1: during production, 1 g of dried leaf was used for 1 ml of liquid. This is a production ratio indicating the amount of raw material and liquid used in the extraction. Botanicals For Life extracts contain the natural profile of the whole plant, not just an isolated component.

The recommended daily dose is 20 drops (approximately 1 ml of extract). Drops can be taken alone or mixed in a small amount of water. During pregnancy, breastfeeding, and for kids, always consult a doctor or qualified professional.

The package lasts for approximately 50 doses. In the Botanicals For Life portfolio, this extract is part of the IMMUNITY range, which includes products associated with immunity and vitality.

How to Choose a Product from the Immunity Botanicals for Life Collection

It's important to distinguish between two groups: extracts suitable for long-term, regular use and extracts intended more for short courses during periods of increased stress. Short courses usually include a break; the specific duration is always determined by the product's recommendation.

For long-term use, the astragalus extract is suitable.

In traditional Chinese medicine, astragalus (Huang Qi) is considered a Qi tonic – the life energy associated with vitality and the body's defence mechanisms. Traditionally, it is used for long-term strengthening and support of resilience, not for short-term intervention courses.

For short courses, herbs traditionally used during acute or seasonal stress are chosen:

  • Echinacea is regarded in phytotherapy as a herb suitable for short-term support of the body's defensive response. The EMA (European Medicines Agency) monograph states a maximum usage period of 10 days.
  • Andrographis is classified in Ayurveda and Chinese medicine as a significantly "cooling" herb used in conditions associated with heat and inflammation.
  • Lapacho (pau d’arco) is traditionally employed in South American phytotherapy, especially during periods of increased bodily stress.
  • Black walnut and wormwood are most commonly used in European phytotherapy as part of targeted courses. Due to the content of active substances, limited usage is recommended; for prolonged use, foreign monographs (e.g., Health Canada) suggest consulting a doctor or pharmacist.
  • Barberry (berberis) is described in Chinese and Persian medicine primarily in relation to digestion and the removal of so-called "heat". Traditionally, it is used in a targeted and rather short-term manner. For longer use, expert consultation is recommended, especially regarding possible interactions.
  • Bearberry (uva ursi) has long been used in European phytotherapy in connection with the urinary tract. The EMA monograph sets the maximum usage period at 1 week.
  • Mullein is traditionally mentioned in European phytotherapy in relation to the respiratory tract and comfort during coughing. It is usually used as needed over shorter periods.
  • Oregano oil is a concentrated aromatic extract with a long tradition in Mediterranean phytotherapy. Due to its intensity, short-term, targeted use is recommended.

Why Choose Botanicals For Life

Botanicals For Life is a British brand led by naturopaths from the Mushrooms For Life team. Distribution is handled by Living Planet Distribution (LPD), a company founded in 2016 by Graham Botfield and Ben Shouler. LPD also encompasses brands such as Planet Paleo, Living Nutrition and Cardio Smile

For herbal extracts, not only the type of plant but also the method of cultivation and harvesting is crucial. Botanicals For Life works with herbs from organic farming (certified by Soil Association Organic), agroecological cultivation, and wild crafted sources. If a specific raw material is subject to the FairWild standard, it is indicated on the label.

Extraction process: An extract is prepared from the dried plant, followed by evaporation, freeze-drying, and conversion into liquid form. The final extract is alcohol-free. The base consists of plant glycerin from organic coconut and purified water. The liquid form allows precise drop-by-drop dosing.

The label provides information about the origin of the raw materials, processing method, and recommended usage. The packaging also includes QR codes with more detailed information, including warnings about contraindications.

Why we recommend this brand: Each extract clearly states key information: origin of the raw material, cultivation and production method, and any certifications.

The selection is thus based on documented data, not just the name of the herb. In the field of herbal supplements, this level of transparent information is essential.

Composition

Plant glycerin from coconut, purified water, extract of small-flowered mullein leaf (Verbascum thapsus) 1 : 1.

Dietary supplement. Does not replace a varied diet. Do not exceed the recommended daily dosage. Keep out of reach of kids.

Composition Analysis and Its Purpose

Small-Flowered Mullein (Leaf)

What it is: Leaf of small-flowered mullein (Verbascum thapsus) from agroecological farms, dried and extracted in a 1 : 1 ratio. 1 ml of extract corresponds to approximately 1000 mg of dried leaf, obtained from roughly 5000 mg of fresh plant.

Function: The mullein leaf naturally contains mucilaginous polysaccharides with a moisturizing, soothing nature for mucous membranes, as well as saponins (e.g., verbascosaponin), flavonoids (luteolin, apigenin, hesperidin), iridoids (aucubin, catalpol), and phenolic acids (chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid). In scientific literature, these substances are described as components that may contribute to the overall comfort of the respiratory tract and the natural protective mechanisms of mucous membranes.

Benefits: The glycerin extract from mullein leaf offers a concentrated, easily dosable form of a traditional herb for periods when we want to care more for respiratory comfort and overall vitality.

Glycerin (glycerol)

What it is: Plant-based glycerin from coconut, serving as a carrier for the herbal extract. Unlike general "plant glycerin," which may come from a mix of different oils, coconut glycerin offers clear origin and a naturally sweet taste.

Function: Maintains the herbal extract in a stable liquid form suitable for drop-by-drop dosing and simultaneously acts as a natural preservative.

Benefits: The drops can be easily mixed into water or another beverage, and the taste is usually milder and sweeter than alcoholic tinctures, which is appreciated by more sensitive individuals.

Other Ingredients

Purified water – complements the glycerin base and keeps the extract in a liquid, easily dosable form.

Usage

The recommended dose is 1 ml (approx. 20 drops) daily. It can be taken on its own or mixed in a small amount of water or another non-alcoholic beverage.

Take with meals (e.g., with breakfast or lunch for better tolerance).

Warnings

  • Food supplement. Does not replace a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
  • Do not exceed the recommended daily dosage. Keep out of reach of kids.
  • Not intended for kids under 12 years.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication, or have health issues, consult the suitability of use with a doctor or other qualified professional.

FAQ

Why does Botanicals For Life use alcohol during extraction?

Alcohol is an effective extraction medium in herbal processing. It is not added to remain in the final product, but to release substances from the plant that are more difficult to obtain with water or glycerin alone. It dissolves water-soluble components as well as some less polar compounds.

For some Botanicals For Life herbal extracts, a water and alcohol phase is combined to obtain a broad spectrum of substances from leaves and other plant parts. Once extraction is complete, the alcohol is gently evaporated in a vacuum and is no longer present in the finished product. The final herbal extract is then transferred into an alcohol-free carrier, specifically coconut glycerin and water.

Triangle

What is the difference between Mullein extract, tea, and capsules?

With Mullein tea, the leaves are usually steeped in hot water. The resulting concentration depends on the amount of raw material, water volume, and steeping time, so the dose is not precisely defined. Capsules usually contain only finely ground leaves or a blend of herbs without prior liquid extraction.

This product is a 1:1 liquid extract of Mullein leaf that has undergone multi-stage extraction. 1 ml of extract corresponds to approximately 1 g of dried leaf, and the recommended daily dose is 20 drops. Both concentration and dosage are clearly defined and easier to compare with other forms.

Triangle

What happens to the alcohol after the herbal extraction?

After the extraction phase is complete, the alcohol is removed from the herbal extract under reduced pressure. Due to the vacuum, it can evaporate at a lower temperature than would be necessary with normal heating, thereby preserving sensitive plant components.

The alcohol thus fulfills its role in releasing substances from the herbs, but is no longer present in the finished product. The result is a concentrated, alcohol-free extract that is then transferred into plant-based glycerin from coconut and purified water.

Triangle

What does "multi-stage extraction" used by Botanicals For Life mean?

Multi-stage extraction refers to a process where several extraction phases are combined to obtain substances from herbs – typically utilizing water and, for selected herbs, alcohol. Different groups of compounds react to different media: some are better released into water, others into alcohol.

For Mullein and other extracts, this means the plant material is not processed by a single simple infusion, but step-by-step to capture a wider spectrum of natural components. Detailed parameters (maceration length, media ratios) are part of the production know-how. The essential point is that it is a multi-stage prepared extract, not just a common infusion.

Triangle

Why is coconut glycerin used in the final extract – and why does it matter?

Glycerin acts as a carrier in the extract. It keeps the herbal extract in liquid form, allows for drop-by-drop dosing, and contributes to the product's stability without the presence of alcohol.

All Botanicals For Life extracts use plant-based glycerin from organic coconut, rather than generically labeled vegetable glycerin from various commodity oils. Information about the carrier's origin is important: it is clear which raw material the medium comes from, and glycerin also has a naturally sweet taste.

Triangle

Isn't an alcohol-free extract weaker than a classic tincture?

The alcohol-free form itself does not mean the extract is weaker. The final concentration is primarily determined by the extraction method and the ratio in which the raw material is converted into liquid form. Alcohol may be an effective means of releasing certain substances during production, but its presence in the final carrier does not dictate the extract's potency.

The difference between a classic tincture and this product lies mainly in the form. An alcohol tincture keeps alcohol as the carrier, whereas here, it is removed after extraction and the extract is transferred into coconut glycerin and water. A 1:1 ratio means that 1 ml of finished extract corresponds to approximately 1 g of dried Mullein leaf. Potency can therefore be judged by the clearly defined concentration, not by whether the carrier is alcohol-based.

Triangle

How is the concentration (1:1) defined for the Mullein extract?

With herbal extracts, it is practical to monitor the concentration, not just whether the carrier is alcohol or alcohol-free. This is what the 1:1 ratio is for – technical information about the ratio of raw material to the final extract.

A 1:1 ratio means that 1 ml of the finished liquid extract corresponds to approximately 1 g of dried Mullein leaf. If the recommended daily dose is 20 drops (approx. 1 ml), you consume roughly the equivalent of 1 g of dried herb daily.

In the market, you often find extracts that do not state a ratio at all or use different ratios, such as 1:2 or 1:5. Generally, the higher the second number, the more diluted the extract is per unit volume. In a 1:5 ratio, 1 ml of extract corresponds to approximately 0.2 g of dry weight. The 1:1 figure is therefore crucial – it provides a clear and comparable parameter.

In contrast, Mullein tea depends on the leaf quantity, water volume, and steeping time, so few people can accurately estimate the actual concentration. With capsules, you usually know the weight of the ground leaf, but it is not an extract – the active substances have not been pre-extracted into a concentrated liquid form. With a 1:1 extract, the concentration is clearly defined and dosing is done by drops.

Triangle

How does Botanicals For Life ensure purity and quality control?

The brand specifies laboratory testing of finished herbal extract batches for common contaminants. They primarily monitor heavy metals, microbiological parameters (yeasts and molds), mycotoxins, and pesticide residues.

Heavy metals are related to the environment and soil where the plant grows. Yeasts and molds represent a typical contamination risk for plant raw materials, especially if they were improperly dried or stored. Mycotoxins are substances that certain molds can produce, which is why they are monitored separately. Pesticides are a common issue, particularly with herbs not grown in organic or agroecological systems.

Importantly, this evaluates not only the origin of the raw material but also the condition of the final extract sold in the bottle. The quality of herbal supplements consists of several steps: where the material comes from, how it was processed, and whether the final product meets purity requirements. Only the combination of this information provides a full picture of quality control.
