Product detailed description

Resvital capsules and powder from North American Herbs and Spice contain raw, chemical-free red sour grape powder, the freshest grape extract available.

This sun-dried product full of photonic energy is rich in resveratrol, malic acid, tartaric acid, vitamin C and minerals such as chromium and potassium. The whole grape skin, seeds and sour pulp are used for its production, making it a truly complex grape extract.

  • CAPSULES: In one serving, two capsules, there is 1000 mg of a blend of dried grapes containing resveratrol, of which 31 mg is potassium and 3.3 mg is vitamin C.
  • POWDER: In one serving, a teaspoon, there is 5000 mg of dried grape mixture, of which there is 47 mg of potassium, 42 mcg of chromium and 5 mg of vitamin C.

What is resveratrol?

  • Resveratrol is a plant compound that acts as an antioxidant. Its main food sources include red wine, grapes, some berries and peanuts.
  • This compound is mainly concentrated in the skins and seeds of grapes and berries.
  • These parts of the grape are part of the fermentation of red wine, which is why it has a particularly high concentration of resveratrol(source).
  • However, most research on resveratrol has been conducted in animals and test tubes using high amounts of the compound(source 1)(source 2).
  • Of the limited research in humans, most has focused on supplemental forms of the compound at concentrations higher than can be obtained through food(source).

Resveratrol and diabetes

  • A new study is investigating whether an antioxidant commonly found in certain wines and fruits has a beneficial effect on the cardiovascular health of patients with diabetes.
  • This compound belongs to polyphenols, a group of chemicals of plant origin with antioxidant properties.
  • Some studies(source) suggest that polyphenols may have a protective role against heart disease by improving blood vessel function and regulating inflammation.
  • New research presented at the American Heart Association's 2017 Scientific Sessions on Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, and Peripheral Vascular Disease in Minnesota examined the effect of resveratrol on arterial stiffness in people with diabetes.

Purpose of the study

  • As we age, our arteries become less elastic.
  • This can result in a variety of adverse cardiovascular events, including elevated blood pressure, coronary artery disease and stroke.
  • As the authors of the new study explain, patients with diabetes show signs of premature ageing of the arteries.
  • However, some animal studies have shown that resveratrol can reduce the stiffness of the aorta - the main artery in the human body that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body.
  • These studies revealed that resveratrol activates a gene called SIRT1, which can slow aging.
  • The research so far has motivated a team of scientists - led by Ji-Yao Ella Zhang, a PhD student at the Whitaker Heart Institute at Boston University in Massachusetts - to investigate whether resveratrol has the same effect in humans.

Conclusions of the study

  • The standard method(source) for measuring aortic stiffness is a test called carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (CFPWV).
  • In a new study, researchers used the CFPWV test to determine aortic stiffness in 57 patients with type 2 diabetes.
  • Participants were on average 56 years old and considered obese according to standard body mass index (BMI) calculations.
  • Initially, patients were given daily doses of 100 milligrams of resveratrol for two weeks.
  • The dose was then increased to 300 milligrams per day for another two weeks.
  • Patients were also given a matching placebo without polyphenols for a total of four weeks, with a two-week washout period between treatments.
  • No statistically significant changes were found in the entire study group after resveratrol administration.
  • However, in a subgroup of 23 patients who were found to have high arterial stiffness at the start of the study, a dose of 300 milligrams of resveratrol per day appeared to reduce aortic stiffness by 9%.
  • Moreover, this effect was proportionally correlated with dose: a 100 milligram daily intake of resveratrol reduced aortic stiffness by a smaller 4.8 percent.
  • In contrast, aortic stiffness increased with placebo.

Who benefits more from resveratrol supplementation

  • Resveratrol may be more beneficial for patients with diabetes than for healthy individuals.
  • The lead author of the study, Dr. Naomi M. Hamburg, commented on the significance of these findings, "The conclusion adds to new evidence that there may be interventions that can reverse the blood vessel abnormalities that occur with aging and that are more pronounced in people with type 2 diabetes and obesity," Hamburg said in a press release.
  • Dr. However, Hamburg, who is also the head of the vascular biology section at Boston University School of Medicine in Massachusetts, cautions that resveratrol may not be as beneficial for people who don't have diabetes."The effect of resveratrol may be more about improving structural changes in the aorta and less about relaxing the blood vessels, and people with more normal aortic stiffness may not benefit as much," she said.
  • The study's lead author also commented on the results, " We found that resveratrol also activates the longevity gene SIRT1 in humans, and this may be a potential mechanism by which dietary supplements reduce aortic stiffness," Zhang said. "However, the changes in this small and short-term study are not proof. Longer-term studies are needed to test the effects of daily dietary supplementation with resveratrol on vascular function."
