- One capsule daily with a meal: swallow whole with water or juice. Choose 10, 60 or 120 capsules for the same number of daily doses.
Food supplement.
Why it’s Pravé Bio
We’ve used Oreganol P73 since 2015, when we first stocked it in our London shop. We’ve worked directly with North American Herb & Spice ever since. We value its own product development, wild-sourced ingredients & in-house manufacturing.
- Wild oregano, selected for its natural oil profile. P73 blends oils from edible oregano species with naturally high carvacrol & low thymol levels. NAHS does not genetically modify the plants or artificially increase the level of individual constituents.
- Local knowledge at the source. NAHS works with long-standing harvesting partners & village communities, with collection practices designed to avoid over-picking & protect local habitats.
- Organic olive oil. A plant-based shell. The oil is already blended with certified organic extra virgin olive oil inside a tapioca capsule—a practical choice if the strong taste of oregano drops isn’t for you.
Oreganol P73 Original Strength softgels
Wild Mediterranean oregano oil, organic extra virgin olive oil & a soft, plant-based capsule. Original Strength is the standard blend in the Oreganol P73 range. It offers a measured oil dose without counting drops or adding a carrier at home.
‘Original Strength’ describes the blend’s concentration. Super Strength contains a higher proportion of oregano oil relative to olive oil. Both are P73 formulas, but the weight of the complete blend does not tell you how much oregano oil it contains.
This is distilled oregano oil in a softgel. Steam distillation draws the plant’s volatile aromatic compounds into the vapour; cooling separates the oil from the water. That oil is then blended with extra virgin olive oil, which acts as its carrier & stabiliser. A tapioca shell holds the liquid fill without animal gelatine. The current label also identifies the supplement as non-GMO & soya-free.
If you prefer a liquid, Original Strength drops offer the same range in another form, with oregano’s bold, peppery taste. Follow the directions for the drops; their dose is different from that of the softgels.
A note on health claims. Research can tell us about an ingredient’s composition, but does not establish an authorised health claim for this capsule at its daily dose. Our FAQ explains the difference.
Carvacrol & thymol: what the P73 percentages tell you
Start with two different things: the oregano oil itself & the finished blend in your capsule. Carvacrol percentages describe the former. The 140 mg on the Original Strength label describes the latter.
73%: the oregano oil itself
- Approximately 73% carvacrol refers to the oregano oil before dilution. It is an average, not the concentration of carvacrol in a finished softgel. Each capsule contains 140 mg of the complete oil blend; the label does not state a separate carvacrol amount.
Less than 2% thymol
- NAHS selects several edible oregano species with naturally low thymol. It specifies less than 2% thymol in its oregano oil before the carrier is added. Its product statement also explains that individual constituent levels are not artificially increased.
- A percentage is not a daily dose. A useful comparison also needs the finished blend’s concentration, its carrier & the amount taken each day. Chemical analyses do not establish one ‘best’ carvacrol-to-thymol ratio for people, or show that the highest percentage is the most suitable choice.
Why natural oregano oils vary
- Oregano oils naturally vary. A 2024 analysis of four commercial essential oils found 76.64–85.70% carvacrol & 1.65–2.43% thymol, identifying 119 compounds across the samples. These are results for the oils tested, not an analysis of P73 or a recommended ratio to take.
- The plant & the harvest both matter. Carvacrol content differs between species, wild populations & harvests. NAHS describes a natural P73 range of 68–78%, depending on the harvest year. Selecting a particular profile takes knowledge of the growing regions, followed by analysis of the oil. Other selected oregano sources can naturally have higher levels, including the OregaULTRA oil described below.
- Wild sourcing needs responsible harvesting. Collectors must consider plant populations, harvest timing & how much to gather. Cultivation makes supply easier to plan & can reduce pressure on wild habitats. NAHS chooses wild oregano, works with local harvesters & includes preventing over-harvesting among its sourcing principles. Those details tell you something a percentage cannot.
Natural & isolated carvacrol: what testing can tell you
- Isolated carvacrol is a separate commercial ingredient. Suppliers also sell synthetic carvacrol at a purity of at least 98%. Adding an isolate can raise its percentage in a blend, but does not reproduce a whole essential oil’s original composition. A ‘90% carvacrol’ label needs context: how was that level achieved? A high percentage alone does not prove that anything synthetic has been added.
- Testing composition is different from testing origin. GC–MS—gas chromatography–mass spectrometry—measures an oil’s constituent profile. Isotope analysis can help distinguish natural from synthetic carvacrol. A 2006 study found different hydrogen isotope ratios in the natural & synthetic samples it tested. This is background on the method, not a test we attribute to NAHS.
Other formulas: OregaULTRA & H2Orega
- OregaULTRA uses a different selected oregano oil. OregaULTRA drops use wild Mediterranean oregano with a declared 84% carvacrol in the oregano oil itself, before blending with olive oil. The difference from Original Strength includes the oregano selected, as well as the carrier ratio. NAHS expressly excludes added synthetic carvacrol.
For a gentler herbal drink, we like H2Orega. Its micellised oil disperses in water. In our experience, the diluted flavour is lightly herbal & spicy, without the pronounced burning sensation of oil-based drops under the tongue. A little water gives a stronger flavour; a larger mug of water, tea or juice makes it much subtler.
Our favourite way to take it: lukewarm water with a teaspoon of honey. We stir in the recommended five drops, adding the honey once the water is lukewarm. It reminds us of a mild herbal tea. Choose from our honeys from different regions to find a flavour you enjoy.
Oregano capsules, essential oil or dried herb?
Similar names can describe very different products. An oregano supplement blended with a carrier, a pure aromatherapy essential oil & dried oregano for cooking each have their own composition & directions. Here is how to tell them apart.
To take: Original Strength softgels
The oregano oil is already blended with organic extra virgin olive oil inside each softgel. The carrier lowers the essential oil’s concentration in the complete blend. There is nothing to mix or dilute yourself: swallow the capsule whole, following its label.
For aromatherapy: pure oregano essential oil
Pure essential oil is a concentrated distillate without an added carrier. Distilling oregano leaves & flowers extracts their volatile aromatic compounds; it does not produce olive oil infused with the herb. A ‘100% pure’ label does not, by itself, mean an oil is suitable for swallowing.
Geusi Vounou Organic Oregano Essential Oil, from a family farm in Greece, is one example.
- Essential oils are used as fragrance ingredients in aromatherapy, cosmetics & household products. Application & dilution must follow the individual product’s directions; the name ‘oregano oil’ is not a set of instructions.
- Do not swallow undiluted oregano essential oil or put drops directly inside your mouth. It can severely irritate the mouth, oesophagus & stomach. It is not for taking by the spoonful or using instead of dried culinary herbs.
For the kitchen: dried oregano
For tomatoes, feta, roast potatoes & marinades, choose organic dried Greek oregano. You will find more herbs, spices & Greek specialities in our Geusi Vounou collection.
Why Oreganol P73 uses olive oil
Original Strength’s carrier is certified organic extra virgin olive oil. Other oregano supplements may use MCT. Both blend with essential oil to lower its concentration, but differ in composition, flavour & stability. Neither makes an ordinary oil blend dissolve in water.
Extra virgin olive oil
- Mechanically extracted, without refining. It retains natural olive constituents, including phenolic compounds & tocopherols. Variety, harvest & storage influence its composition.
- Rich in oleic acid. This monounsaturated fatty acid resists oxidation better than polyunsaturated fatty acids. The oil’s natural antioxidants also contribute to stability, although protection from light & heat still matters.
- A flavour of its own. Extra virgin olive oil suits a formulation that retains the character of an unrefined food oil. NAHS chooses the certified organic version for Original Strength.
- For your kitchen, too. Explore our extra virgin olive oils, including high-polyphenol options, with provenance & flavour details to help you choose for salads, vegetables or finishing a dish.
MCT oil
- A specified fatty acid profile. Common MCT oils contain mainly triglycerides of caprylic acid (C8) & capric acid (C10), sourced from coconut or palm kernel oil, for example. This is not ordinary coconut oil.
- High oxidative stability. The saturated fatty acids have no double bonds susceptible to oxidation. A consistent composition also helps manufacturers control the finished blend.
- Neutral flavour & easy flow. MCT can be useful when a carrier should have little influence on aroma, or when viscosity matters during mixing & filling. It does not remove oregano essential oil’s strong flavour.
- For coffee or smoothies. Browse our MCT oils & follow each product’s directions. Adding MCT alone does not make an oil dissolve in water.
- What we appreciate about NAHS’s choice: the carrier is a certified organic, extra virgin food oil with its naturally occurring phenolic compounds & tocopherols. MCT offers a different set of properties: a specified triglyceride composition, neutral flavour & consistency in processing.
- ‘Extra virgin’ & ‘organic’ mean different things. Extra virgin status requires physical extraction without refining, plus chemical & sensory standards. Organic certification concerns production methods. Together, they tell you more about the carrier than its name alone.
Choosing oregano oil: origin, ingredients & dose
Look beyond the headline percentage. Ask who makes the oil, where the oregano comes from & how the maker checks it. NAHS develops & manufactures its own products, so we take sourcing, extraction & formulation questions directly to its team. Private-label production does not automatically mean poor quality; missing information is the more useful concern.
Read the label for intended use, carrier oil & amounts per daily dose. Milligrams of oregano oil & milligrams of a complete blend are different measurements.
The label, decoded: P73 & 140 mg
P73 is NAHS’s name for a blend of oils from selected edible wild oregano species. The name dates to oregano oil research at Georgetown University in the early 1990s. It is not a botanical species or a general quality grade.
- P stands for potency, purity & phenolic power. These are the brand’s references to concentration, purity & phenolic constituents such as carvacrol & thymol. They explain the name, rather than a separate certification or laboratory result.
- 73 refers to an average of approximately 73% carvacrol in the oregano oil itself. Natural levels vary between harvests. This is the oil before the olive oil carrier is added, not the finished softgel.
- 140 mg is the whole oil fill per softgel. It includes oregano oil & organic extra virgin olive oil. The label does not state a separate weight for the oregano component, so you cannot calculate a carvacrol amount from the 140 mg figure.

North American Herb & Spice: formulation, expertise & in-house manufacturing
From wild ingredients to finished formulasNAHS develops its own formulas & makes them with its own team. Led by founder Judy K. Gray, its formulation specialists work alongside manufacturing & quality-control staff.
Oregano was just the beginning
Oreganol P73 paved the way for a much wider range. Judy K. Gray has developed more than 400 formulas for NAHS & its sister brand, Physician’s Strength, which has a separate range for healthcare practitioners.
A whole-food approach
Herbs, spices & foods supply a broad range of naturally occurring compounds. NAHS looks beyond individual constituents to the wider aromatic profile of its plant oils. That thinking shapes its choice of oregano species for P73 & the ingredients it pairs them with.
Beyond oregano
Black seed, turmeric, chaga & wild berries sit alongside fish oils & food blends in the range. Capsules, drops & drinks each have their own formula & directions.

FAQs
How do Original Strength & Super Strength differ?
Super Strength has more oregano oil relative to olive oil. Both versions can contain 140 mg of the complete oil blend per capsule, so the fill weight alone will not tell you the concentration. Original Strength is the standard P73 blend. A more concentrated formula is not automatically the better choice for everyone; consider your tolerance & follow the directions for the product you choose.

How much carvacrol is in a softgel?
The label does not give a separate carvacrol amount. Its 140 mg figure covers the entire oregano & olive oil blend. The 73 in P73 refers to average carvacrol content in the oregano oil before the carrier is added. You cannot calculate the amount in a capsule by taking 73% of 140 mg: you would first need the weight of the oregano oil itself.

Are the softgels vegan?
Yes. The current formula has a plant-based tapioca shell, without animal gelatine. It holds the liquid oregano & olive oil fill & is suitable for vegetarians & vegans. The word ‘softgel’ describes the capsule format; it is the shell’s ingredients that determine whether it is plant-based.

How do I take them & how long will a pack last?
Take one capsule daily with a meal. Swallow whole with water or juice. There is nothing to measure or dilute. Packs of 10, 60 & 120 capsules provide the same number of daily doses. That tells you how long the pack lasts, rather than how long you should take the supplement. Drops & other concentrations have their own directions.

Is the capsule filled with oil or dried oregano?
It contains a liquid blend of oregano & olive oils. Steam distillation separates oregano’s volatile aromatic compounds from the plant. This produces an oil with a different composition from ground leaves or whole-herb powder. Their weights in milligrams do not provide a like-for-like comparison, & their directions are not interchangeable.

Why does the formula contain olive oil?
Olive oil carries & stabilises the oregano essential oil. It lowers the essential oil’s concentration in the finished blend. Original Strength uses certified organic extra virgin olive oil, so you do not need to add a carrier yourself. The finished supplement still needs to be taken at its recommended dose.

Can children take these softgels?
This version is for adults. Do not work out a child’s dose from body weight or the directions for oregano drops. NAHS’s children’s products have their own formulas & age-specific directions. Check the individual product when choosing for a child.

Can I take them while pregnant or breastfeeding?
Do not take this supplement during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Concentrated oregano oil is different from the small amounts of the herb used in cooking. A botanical ingredient or an olive oil carrier does not establish suitability. Ask a doctor or pharmacist about any alternative supplement you are considering.

Why are there no health claims on this page?
Research on an ingredient does not, by itself, authorise a health claim for a finished supplement. A laboratory study may describe an oil’s composition or its behaviour under specific conditions. It does not establish the same effect in someone taking this softgel.
Health claims used to sell foods must meet the relevant requirements for the ingredient & daily dose. Botanical claims also need to be assessed under the rules for claims still awaiting a decision. We do not have evidence establishing an applicable health claim for this product. We explain its ingredients, origin, processing & use without turning chemical analyses into promises of health benefits.

What does P73 mean?
P73 is NAHS’s name for its blend of oils from several oregano species. P stands for potency, purity & phenolic power: the brand’s references to concentration, purity & phenolic constituents. The 73 refers to average carvacrol content of approximately 73% in the oregano oil before olive oil is added. It is not a botanical species, a general quality grade or the concentration of carvacrol in a finished softgel.

How long should I take oregano oil capsules?
The pack size does not set a recommended course length. The dose is one capsule daily, but that does not establish how long everyone should take it. NAHS markets P73 for daily use; low thymol content alone does not show that indefinite use suits everyone. If you plan to take it long-term, take medication or have a medical condition, discuss suitability & duration with a doctor or pharmacist.

Can they cause heartburn or stomach irritation?
Some people experience digestive discomfort when taking oregano oil. Take the capsules whole with a meal, as directed. The shell & olive oil carrier do not guarantee that everyone will tolerate them. Stop taking the supplement if you develop heartburn, nausea or stomach pain; seek medical advice if symptoms persist. Do not increase the dose to try to get a faster effect.
