What is Calcium?
Calcium (Ca) is an essential mineral that is the most abundant in the human body. About 99% of calcium is found in bones and teeth, where it ensures their strength and structure. The rest is present in the blood, muscles, and other body tissues, where it performs a number of important functions.
How does Calcium work?
Calcium is an essential mineral that supports the strength of bones and teeth, enables muscle contractions, nerve signal transmission, and proper blood clotting. The body cannot produce it on its own, so it is important to obtain it from diet or supplements.
▶Important Notice
Usage of Calcium from Red Algae
Calcium from red algae can be combined with vitamin D3 for better absorption of calcium in the body, which is suitable for issues with bone density, brittle nails, muscle cramps, or increased mineral needs during growth, menopause, or recovery.
Always take dietary supplements with a time gap from medications or coffee, which can reduce their absorption.

Breakthrough Calcium Study by Robert P. Heaney
Robert P. Heaney, MD (1927–2016) was an American endocrinologist and one of the most cited researchers in the field of calcium physiology and osteoporosis. His work defined how much calcium the human body actually absorbs and how this process differs depending on the form of intake. The following article summarizes his key clinical study from 1987 and the subsequent randomized trial from 1990, which together changed the view on supplemental calcium.
1. Calcium Bioavailability: Calcium Citrate–Malate (CCM) Study, 1987
Heaney et al. tested calcium citrate–malate (CCM) against traditional calcium carbonate and cow's milk. The study used double isotope methods in 15 healthy women and 6-day tracer retention in rats.[1] CCM was absorbed ~35% better than carbonate and achieved similar absorption to milk, despite containing a smaller volume of elemental calcium.
Methodology
- Design: crossover, each subject received all three sources of calcium.
- Dosage: 250 mg of elemental Ca in each tested form.
- Evaluation: fractional absorption using urinary isotope ratio and bone ^45Ca retention in rats.
Key Results
- CCM demonstrated the highest absolute absorbability (37% vs 27% for carbonate).
- When administered in orange juice, absorption was 5 percentage points higher, sparking a trend of fortified beverages with CCM.
- The study demonstrated that salt solubility is a key factor for calcium bioavailability.
2. Follow-up RCT: Bone Mass Density in Postmenopausal Women, 1990
In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, Robert P. Heaney's team followed 301 healthy women aged 55–75 for two years.[2] Half had Ca intake <400 mg/day. The intervention was 500 mg Ca (carbonate or CCM) daily.
- Spinal and femoral BMD was maintained in the supplement group, while it decreased by ~1% annually in the placebo group.
- The greatest effect was seen in women with the lowest baseline calcium intake (<400 mg/day).
- No serious adverse events or hypercalcemia were reported.
3. Implications for Clinical Practice
Heaney's evidence supported recommendations:
- Prefer highly soluble salts (e.g., citrate-malate) with low gastric acidity or when taken on an empty stomach.
- Supplement the dose if dietary intake falls below 1000–1200 mg/day, especially in postmenopausal women.
- Combine with vitamin D only in deficient or institutionalized patients.
4. About the Author
Dr. Heaney served for over 50 years at Creighton University, published more than 450 papers, and received the title Legend of Osteoporosis.[3][4][5] His "Nun Study" and articles on vitamin D defined new recommendations for calcium and D intake not only in the USA but also in the World Health Organization.
