- 73 refers to an average of approximately 73% carvacrol in the original oregano oil blend.
- The percentage describes the oregano oil before it is mixed with a carrier. It does not state the carvacrol concentration in the finished drops.

P73 oregano and cinnamon: selection and extraction
P73 starts with the selection of wild oregano. NAHS uses several edible species from Mediterranean mountain habitats, selected for their aromatic profile, with substantial carvacrol and low thymol levels. In OregaRESP, their essential oils are blended with extra virgin olive oil, sage, cumin and cinnamon.
Steam distillation concentrates oregano’s volatile aromatic compounds. Steam carries these compounds from the herb. As the vapour cools and condenses, the essential oil separates, retaining carvacrol, thymol and other naturally occurring compounds. Fibre and other non-volatile constituents remain behind.
The drops use cinnamon bark oil. Cinnamon is present as an aromatic oil. For OregaRESP oil softgels, NAHS uses cinnamon oleoresin obtained by CO₂ extraction. The two ingredients represent different ways of processing cinnamon bark.
Cinnamon bark oil and CO₂ extract: the difference
- Cinnamon bark oil in the drops. This liquid blend contains aromatic oil rather than ground bark. Ground cinnamon also retains fibre and other non-volatile plant constituents.
- CO₂ oleoresin in the softgels. Under controlled pressure and temperature, carbon dioxide extracts aromatic compounds from the bark. Extraction conditions affect the proportions of cinnamon compounds in the resulting extract.
Beyond carvacrol: oregano’s aromatic profile
- Phenolic constituents. Carvacrol and thymol are phenolic monoterpenes within the broader aromatic mixture obtained by distilling the herb.
- Other terpenes. Oregano essential oils also contain p-cymene and γ-terpinene. Alongside carvacrol and thymol, they form the broader aromatic profile of the distilled oil.
- Plant selection shapes the finished oil. Different oregano species have different proportions of aromatic compounds. P73 uses selected edible wild species, so the plants’ natural composition helps determine the essential oil’s profile.
Oil drops, tinctures and micellised liquids
OregaRESP uses extra virgin olive oil as its carrier. The aromatic ingredients are diluted in this oil base. The carrier also affects how you take the product: an oil blend behaves differently from an alcohol extract or a liquid processed to disperse in water.
- Olive oil: the fat-based carrier. It consists mainly of fatty acids bound in fats. It carries the aromatic ingredients and is included in the declared blend weight.
- Essential oils: concentrated aromatic compounds. Oregano and the other botanical oils supply volatile plant constituents. Their composition differs from pressed olive oil and whole dried herbs.
- Tinctures: extraction into alcohol. Alcohol tinctures extract plant compounds into alcohol or a mixture of alcohol and water. OregaRESP has an oil base, with no alcohol in its ingredients.
- Micellisation: dispersing oil in water. H2Orega is processed this way. OregaRESP is not micellised, so its oils do not dissolve in water.
Extra virgin olive oil is obtained mechanically, without refining. It retains naturally occurring olive constituents, including phenolic compounds, alongside its fats. These differ from the aromatic compounds in distilled oregano oil.
OregaRESP drops, oil softgels or powder capsules?
OregaRESP drops contain four aromatic botanical oils in an olive oil base. The liquid dose can be added to juice or food. Six drops contain 225 mg of the blend, giving 450 mg at the recommended twice-daily dose.
OregaRESP 4-in-1 oil softgels contain 140 mg of the blend per capsule. A soft, plant-based tapioca shell seals the liquid filling inside. When swallowed intact, it limits direct contact between the oil and your tongue. The cinnamon ingredient is CO₂ oleoresin.
OregaRESP 6-in-1 powder capsules contain oil extracts dried at low temperatures. The blend includes oregano, cumin and sage extracts, cinnamon CO₂ oleoresin, whole oregano herb and ginger. Each capsule contains 450 mg of the blend, with concentrated aromatic extracts and the wider range of constituents found in whole herbs.
Oreganol P73 Original Strength drops contain oregano oil in an olive oil carrier without sage, cumin or cinnamon. For children and adults sensitive to strong flavours, NAHS offers Orega-Cinn: oregano and cinnamon in a blend with water, syrups and fruit ingredients.
Why the blend includes extra virgin olive oil
- A carrier for concentrated essential oils. Olive oil dilutes the aromatic oils. It is included in the declared blend weight of 225 mg per six drops.
- Fatty acids and aromatic compounds. Olive oil consists mainly of fats, whereas oregano essential oil contains volatile compounds extracted by distillation. They contribute different types of compounds to the blend.
- Extraction without refining. Extra virgin olive oil is obtained by mechanical processes. It retains naturally occurring olive constituents alongside its fatty acids.
Cumin and sage: the other botanical ingredients
- Cumin, rather than black seed. Cuminum cyminum is botanically distinct from caraway and black seed. The black seed oil used in other NAHS products comes from Nigella sativa.
- Wild sage oil. Oregano and the other spice ingredients are accompanied by aromatic sage oil. The liquid blend does not contain sage leaves.
- What the blend weight includes. The 225 mg figure covers all four aromatic oils and the olive oil carrier. NAHS does not list their individual proportions.
Strong flavour: take with food or choose capsules?
- With juice or food. NAHS recommends these as ways to take its multi-spice blend. The drops can be taken with or without meals.
- Oil sealed inside a capsule. Swallowing OregaRESP softgels intact limits direct contact between the filling and your tongue. A herbal aftertaste or burping may still occur.
- A milder, fruity liquid. Orega-Cinn contains water, yacon syrup, goldenberry syrup and raspberry ingredients. It does not contain the same four botanical oils as OregaRESP.
Why NAHS offers whole oregano herb as well as oil
- Whole herb in OregaMax. OregaMax contains dried wild oregano, sumac, garlic and onion. Using the whole oregano herb retains non-volatile constituents that do not pass into the distilled essential oil.
- Alongside oregano oil. NAHS recommends taking OregaMax with Oreganol P73 oil. This provides whole oregano herb alongside its distilled aromatic compounds.

Judy K. Gray, M.S.: founder of NAHS
- Education and early career. She earned a bachelor’s degree in 1967 and a master’s degree in 1968, both in education, at the University of Central Missouri. Before founding her own business, she worked in education and marketing.
- Leadership and formulation development. Judy led the American Institute of Curative Medicine from 1990 to 1998 and founded NAHS in 1999. She personally oversees sourcing, formulation development and the brand’s triple-testing process.
