Alcohol is an effective extraction medium in herbal extraction. It is not used so that it remains in the final product, but to help release compounds from the plant that are more difficult to obtain with water or glycerin alone. It dissolves both water-soluble substances and some less polar compounds.

With herbs such as barberry (Berberis vulgaris), an alcohol extract is first prepared in order to obtain the widest possible spectrum of compounds from the bark. The alcohol is then removed from the extract, and the finished extract is transferred into an alcohol-free carrier. In this case, alcohol is only part of the manufacturing process, not an ingredient you consume in the final product.

In herbal tea made from barberry, the bark is usually simmered in water for a longer time. The final concentration depends on the amount of raw material used, the volume of water, and the length of boiling, so the dose is not precisely defined. Capsules typically contain only finely ground bark, sometimes with fillers added, without prior extraction.

This product is a 1:1 liquid extract made from barberry bark using a multi-step extraction process. 1 ml of extract corresponds to approximately 1 g of dried bark, and the recommended daily dose is 20 drops. Both concentration and dosage are therefore clearly defined.

After the extraction phase is complete, the alcohol is removed from the extract under reduced pressure. Thanks to the vacuum, it can evaporate at a lower temperature than would be required with standard heating. This allows the alcohol to fulfill its role during extraction without remaining present in the final product.

The result is a concentrated alcohol-free extract from barberry bark, which is then transferred into vegetable coconut glycerin and purified water. 

Triple, or multi-step, extraction refers to a process in which several extraction phases are combined to obtain compounds from herbs – usually involving both alcohol and water. Different groups of compounds respond to different media: some are released more effectively into water, others into alcohol.

In the case of barberry, this means the bark is not processed through a single simple infusion, but step by step in order to obtain a broader spectrum of compounds. The detailed parameters (maceration time, solvent ratios) are part of the manufacturer's know-how. For the customer, the important point is that this is a multi-step extract, not a standard herbal infusion.

Glycerin acts as the carrier in the extract. It keeps the extract in liquid form, allows drop-by-drop dosing, and helps maintain product stability without alcohol.

For the customer, this is important information about the origin of the carrier – it makes clear which quality raw material the medium comes from and what the extract is suspended in for long-term use.

An alcohol-free form does not in itself mean the extract is weaker. The final concentration depends primarily on the extraction method and ratio used to transfer the raw material into liquid form. Alcohol may be an effective tool during manufacturing for releasing certain compounds, but its presence in the final carrier does not determine the strength of the extract.

The difference between a classic tincture and this product lies mainly in the format. An alcohol tincture retains alcohol as the carrier, whereas here the alcohol is removed after extraction and the extract is transferred into coconut glycerin and water. A 1:1 ratio means that 1 ml of the finished extract corresponds to approximately 1 g of dried bark. Strength should therefore be assessed according to clearly stated concentration, not whether the carrier is alcohol-based.

With herbal extracts, it is better to look at the concentration than whether the carrier is alcohol-based or alcohol-free. That is exactly what the 1:1 figure indicates: a technical ratio between the raw material and the finished extract.

A 1:1 ratio means that 1 ml of finished liquid extract corresponds to approximately 1 g of dried plant material. If the recommended daily dose is 20 drops (roughly 1 ml), you are consuming the equivalent of about 1 g of dried barberry bark per day. 

On the market, you will often find extracts that do not state the ratio at all, or use other ratios such as 1:2 or 1:5. In general, the higher the second number, the more diluted the finished extract is per unit of volume. With a 1:5 ratio, for example, 1 ml of extract corresponds to about 0.2 g of dry material. This is why the 1:1 figure is so important for customers – it provides a clear and comparable parameter.

By contrast, with a barberry decoction, the actual concentration depends on the amount of bark used, the volume of water, and the boiling time, so few people can estimate the true strength. With capsules, you usually know the weight of the ground bark, but it is not an extract – the active compounds have not been pre-converted into a concentrated liquid form. With a 1:1 extract, the concentration is defined and dosing is done by drops.

The brand states that finished extract batches are laboratory tested for common contaminants. These tests focus particularly on heavy metals, microbiological parameters (yeasts and moulds), mycotoxins, and pesticide residues.

Heavy metals are related to the environment and soil in which the plant grows. Yeasts and moulds represent a typical contamination risk in plant materials, especially if they were dried or stored improperly. Mycotoxins are substances that some moulds can produce, which is why they are monitored separately. Pesticides are a common issue particularly with herbs not grown in organic agriculture.

What matters is that this evaluates not only the origin of the raw material, but also the condition of the finished extract as sold in the bottle. The quality of herbal food supplements consists of several steps: where the raw material comes from, how it was processed, and whether the final product meets purity requirements. Only the combination of these factors provides a complete picture of quality control.
