How does WoldoClean 2-in-1 liquid descaler work?
The term 2-in-1 cleaning and descaling refers to the care of your coffee machine’s internal water circuit. The concentrated solution loosens and removes limescale and other mineral deposits that build up inside the appliance during regular use.
Descaler serves a different purpose from coffee machine cleaning tablets. It is not designed to remove coffee oils or greasy deposits from the brew unit. For thorough machine care, descaling the water circuit and cleaning the brewing system are separate but complementary maintenance steps.
What is the difference between the pink-red and clear WoldoClean descalers?
Both products are concentrated 2-in-1 descalers intended to clean and descale the internal water circuit. The pink-red version features a practical colour indicator, making it easy to see whether the solution still has descaling power. The clear 750 ml version is formulated with sulfamic acid, citric acid and a corrosion inhibitor that helps protect delicate internal components and pipework.
| Feature | Pink-red descaler with colour indicator | Clear descaler without colour indicator |
|---|---|---|
| 2-in-1 cleaning and descaling | Yes | Yes |
| Colour indicator | Yes – the change in colour shows when the solution’s descaling effectiveness has been exhausted | No – a clear solution without colour-based monitoring |
| Main practical benefit | Lets you check the solution’s remaining descaling effectiveness at a glance | The formulation includes a corrosion inhibitor that helps protect delicate components and pipework |
| Available sizes | 750 ml and an economical 5-litre container | 750 ml |
| Which one should you choose? | Choose this version if you want to follow the solution’s effectiveness by its colour or need a larger container | Choose this version if you prefer a clear solution and a formulation that includes a corrosion inhibitor |
Which version is right for you? Choose the pink-red descaler if you would like to monitor the remaining descaling effectiveness by its colour or need the economical 5-litre size. If you prefer a clear solution without a colour indicator, take a look at the clear WoldoClean 2-in-1 liquid descaler. Its corrosion inhibitor helps protect delicate internal coffee machine components.
Important: the term 2-in-1 refers to cleaning and descaling the internal water circuit by loosening mineral build-up and removing limescale. Neither version replaces coffee machine cleaning tablets designed to remove coffee oils and greasy deposits from the brew unit.
How does the descaler’s colour indicator work?
The colour indicator makes it easy to tell whether the prepared solution still has descaling power. The liquid starts out pink-red and gradually changes colour as it reacts with limescale.
- Pink-red solution: the descaling effectiveness has not yet been fully exhausted.
- Yellowish solution: the descaling effectiveness has been exhausted and a fresh dose is required for the next cycle.
If the solution remains pink-red after the cycle has finished, the manufacturer states that its remaining descaling effectiveness may be used immediately on another suitable appliance. Do not reuse the solution once it has turned yellowish. Never pour used solution back into the original container, and always follow the instructions supplied with the appliance.
Which coffee machines and appliances is the descaler suitable for?
WoldoClean is primarily intended for the regular maintenance of coffee and espresso machines. It is suitable for bean-to-cup, manual espresso, capsule and filter coffee machines. Subject to the appliance manufacturer’s instructions, it may also be used in other appliances and on suitable surfaces affected by hard-water deposits.
- bean-to-cup coffee machines,
- manual espresso machines,
- capsule and filter coffee machines,
- electric kettles,
- steam ovens and steam generators,
- steam cleaners and steam ironing stations,
- dishwashers and washing machines, provided their manufacturer permits the use of a liquid descaler,
- taps, shower heads and other suitable surfaces affected by limescale.
The product is listed as compatible with De’Longhi, Jura, Miele, WMF, Saeco, Tassimo, Cafissimo, Krups, Senseo, Philips, Dolce Gusto, Nespresso and other popular brands. The instructions for your particular appliance model should always take precedence.
How much liquid descaler should you use in a coffee machine?
The recommended dilution ratio is 1:4 – one part descaler to four parts water. For one standard descaling cycle, use 125 ml of concentrate with 500 ml of water, unless the appliance manufacturer specifies otherwise.
- Read the coffee machine manufacturer’s descaling instructions before you begin.
- If there is a water filter in the tank, remove it in accordance with the coffee machine instructions.
- Pour 125 ml of descaler into the water tank.
- Add 500 ml of water.
- Start the automatic descaling programme and follow the instructions shown by the machine.
- If the machine does not have an automatic programme, run the prepared solution through it as directed in the appliance manual.
- The descaler manufacturer recommends a contact time of approximately 5 to 10 minutes, unless the appliance instructions specify a different procedure.
- Once descaling is complete, rinse the water tank thoroughly.
- Run one or two full tanks of clean water through the machine, or follow the rinsing procedure specified by its manufacturer.
Dilution and application instructions may differ for other appliances. Always follow the directions provided by the manufacturer of the appliance you are cleaning.
How much does one coffee machine descaling cycle cost?
For a descaler, the cost per cycle is more useful than a daily cost. The calculation below is based on a 125 ml dose and the current prices shown on the English version of PraveBio.cz.
| Size | Current price | Number of doses | Cost per cycle | Approximate daily cost* |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 750 ml | €9.87 | 6 | approximately €1.65 | approximately €0.05 |
| 5 L | €31.36 | 40 | approximately €0.78 | approximately €0.03 |
* The approximate daily cost assumes one descaling cycle every 30 days. It is not a recommended frequency of use. The actual interval will depend on water hardness, how frequently the appliance is used and the manufacturer’s instructions.
Coffee machine descaler or cleaning tablets?
Liquid descaler and cleaning tablets tackle two different types of build-up:
- Liquid descaler: removes limescale and mineral deposits from the internal water circuit.
- Cleaning tablets: remove coffee oils, greasy deposits and organic residue from the brewing system.
For thorough bean-to-cup coffee machine care, the two cleaning processes complement one another. You may also wish to view our phosphate-free coffee machine cleaning tablets.

Frequently asked questions about WoldoClean descaler with colour indicator
What is the difference between the pink-red and clear WoldoClean descalers?
Both versions are 2-in-1 descalers. The pink-red version has a colour indicator that lets you monitor the solution’s remaining descaling effectiveness and is available in both 750 ml and 5-litre sizes. The clear version does not have a colour indicator. Its 750 ml formulation also includes a corrosion inhibitor that helps protect delicate coffee machine components and internal pipework.
What does 2-in-1 cleaning and descaling mean?
It refers to loosening mineral build-up and removing limescale from the internal water circuit in a single maintenance cycle. The product does not replace cleaning tablets designed to remove coffee oils from the brewing system.
What does it mean when the solution turns yellowish?
A yellowish colour indicates that the solution’s descaling effectiveness has been exhausted. Prepare a fresh dose before starting another descaling cycle.
Is the descaler suitable for De’Longhi, Jura and Nespresso coffee machines?
Yes. The product is listed as compatible with these and other popular brands. Always check the instructions for your particular model and follow its specified descaling programme.
How often should you descale a coffee machine?
The required frequency depends on the hardness of your water, the number of drinks you prepare and the machine’s settings. Follow the machine’s descaling alert or the interval specified by its manufacturer.
Does liquid descaler also remove coffee oils?
No. The descaler is primarily intended to remove limescale and mineral deposits. Coffee oils and greasy deposits in the brew unit should be removed using dedicated coffee machine cleaning tablets.
