Who’s behind the Kult Kefir brand

The driving force behind Kult Kefir is Mathilde Riga, a passionate Belgian bioengineer who turned her love of the biological sciences into a delicious fermented drink. Her journey began in her own kitchen, where her mother passed on water kefir grains—and from that moment a vision was born. Blending home experiments with scientific expertise, she created a brand that pushes the boundaries of traditional fermentation.

During her experiments, Mathilde realised that everyday ingredients hold remarkable potential — and in October 2020 she “planted the seeds” of KULT. Since then, she has shaped a brand philosophy grounded in innovation, authenticity and the simple purity of ingredients. KULT emerges as a union of science and art, poured into every bottle that tells a story of passion, quality and nature’s wonder.

Origin of the Kult Kefir name

The name — how it came about and what it stands for

The word “culture” has its root in the Indo-European kwel, denoting a cyclical process.

The name KULT was chosen as a tribute to the unique relationship between water kefir and the idea of culture. Just as cultural heritage is passed from generation to generation, water kefir grains are handed on in an endless cycle.

It also points to the mother culture—the beneficial microorganisms that trigger the fermentation of every new batch.

What is a fermented lemonade?

A fermented lemonade is a naturally sparkling drink created when a culture (for example, water kefir grains) converts part of the sugar from water and fruit during fermentation into organic acids and gentle bubbles of carbon dioxide. The result is a refreshing beverage with lower residual sugar and a complex flavour—entirely different from ordinary sweetened sodas.

According to KULT Kefir, “water kefir is more than just lemonade”: it’s a traditional fermented drink made from fresh fruit and natural botanicals. The brand uses only real ingredients (with no artificial flavours or extracts), favours fresh, cold-pressed juices and ferments the kefir for almost two days to achieve an authentic flavour profile—a natural alternative to conventional sodas.

KULT lemonades are made in Belgium through artisanal production and in small batches—literally in a microbrewery in Brabant, enabling careful quality control and consistent flavour.

The brand adheres to an organic standard under the supervision of BE-BIO-01 (CERTISYS), the official Belgian organic certification recognised across the EU.

Thanks to its local, small-scale approach, KULT is an honest, authentic drink with a focus on ingredient origin and fair processing.

Flavouring relies on real ingredientsno artificial flavours or extracts. Kult works with a variety of herbs, prioritises fresh, cold-pressed juices and allows the kefir to ferment for almost two days to achieve an authentic flavour profile.

In practice this means recipes like ginger & lemon with a share of ginger and lemon juice, as well as no-sugar variants where a longer fermentation consumes all the sugarwith no sweeteners and no shortcuts.

Is the packaging eco-friendly?

Yes. KULT chooses aluminium cans as a deliberately eco-friendly pack: aluminium can be recycled repeatedly without loss of quality, it’s lightweight and stackable (lower transport emissions) and it also protects the drink better from light and oxygen; the interior has a BPA-free liner.

The brand also asks for proper sorting: cans go into the “blue” bin (metals) and—where glass is used—bottles go into the glass container without the cap. KULT explicitly notes that cans are better for the planet than single-use glass.
